The growth of digital transactions has increased the risks of fraud and identity theft, which has driven the adoption of real-time bank validation technologies. These solutions verify the ownership and validity of accounts, reducing errors in payments and minimizing the risk of identity theft and money laundering.

According to TransUnion data, 6.5% of digital account openings globally show signs of fraud. In addition, the use of synthetic identities generated US$3.2 billion in losses for banks and lenders in the United States during the first half of 2024.

These circumstances are driving banks to turn to technologies that enhance identity verification. "Bank account validation confirms that an account and its holder match, ensuring that the information is legitimate and current. In addition to reducing fraud and money laundering risks, it strengthens regulatory compliance and Know Your Customer (KYC) strategies, optimizing new customer onboarding," says Sebastián Ropero, Product Team Lead, Prometeo.

In the European Union, the implementation of the Verification of Payee (VoP) model has improved the security of bank transfers by requiring verification of the beneficiary before authorizing a payment. This measure, aligned with the PSD2 directive, has strengthened customer protection and has served as a reference for other regions.

In the United States, although there are regulations focused on KYC and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) established by the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FINCEN), there is no standardized mandate for bank account validation. However, the adoption of these solutions has grown as a recommended practice in the financial sector.

In Latin America, countries such as Mexico and Brazil have developed their own KYC and AML regulations, promoting the use of bank account validation as a security and compliance strategy. The adoption of these solutions seeks to anticipate possible regulatory reforms and strengthen trust in digital transactions.

Bank validation methods include biometric authentication, micro-deposits, and instant validations via APIs, the latter being the most efficient for large volumes of customers, says Prometeo.
