1,092 New Deaths Reported

The Ministry of Health reported 1,092 new deaths from COVID-19, the highest number recorded in a single day, raising total deaths to 11,728. Deputy Minister of Health Hugo López-Gatell explained that the 1,092 deaths happened over several days. This death increase almost doubles the greatest increase recorded so far.

Over 3,912 new confirmed positive brought national infections to 101,238, as Mexico became the 13th country to break the 100,000 cases barrier, according to John Hopkins University (JHU).

During today’s briefing, Director of Epidemiology José Luis Alomía said 303,461 people have been tested so far, of which 157,354 were negative. Likewise, there are 44,869 suspicious cases.

Alomía said that the incidence rate of active cases per 100,000 inhabitants is at 13.2 nationwide, while two weeks ago it was at 9.5.

Mexico exceeds crude cut production

National crude production totaled 1,652,000 barrels per day in May, according to Hydrocarbons Commission (CNH) data. The figure is 129,000 barrels less than the production reported in April by the Minister of Energy during the OPEC+ meeting where Mexico agreed to cut 100,000 barrels per day, aligned with a global effort to control oil prices. The national platform includes production of both PEMEX and private companies.

 

Vitro closes US facilities

Vitro announced the definitive closure of two US plants where it manufactures automotive glass. The Mexican company stated that its clients will not be affected after stopping operations in facilities located in Michigan and Indiana. “The decision to definitively close all of the operations of these plants was due to the need to resolve the excess capacity caused by COVID-19,” the company stated.

 

Restrictions on COVID-19 tests imports

CANACINTRA head Enoch Castellanos said COFEPIRS is keeping restrictions on COVID-19 tests imports, including those already approved by the FDA in the US. Castellanos also said that despite the reopening of essential activities, in Ciudad Juárez there is 30 percent of absenteeism in the manufacturing industry, given increasing infections.

 

Light vehicles sales will drop 25 percent

Car sales in Mexico will not be in the same proportions as before the COVID-19 pandemic, as the demand for light vehicles will drop 25 percent, CANACINTRA has reported. The office’s head Enoch Castellanos noted that this sector has a demand crisis, which is worse in Mexico compared to other countries, where governments are giving greater stimulus packages to reactivate their economies.

 

Ferrari prototype ventilator

Racing Team Ferrari and the Italian Institute of Technology delivered the open source the prototype of the F15 mechanical ventilator that both institutions designed to CONACYT. Mexico will be able to produce this model using accessible materials that will reduce their cost to one tenth, compared to their current market prices.

 

BBVA donates 100 ventilators

BBVA Mexico announced the donation of 100 intensive care ventilators to the health sector to fight COVID-19, through the program ‘La Fuerza de un Día’ in which collaborators of the financial group donated one day's salary to support the fight against the pandemic.

 

Pandemic hits scores of health workers

Healthcare workers account for more than 20 percent of all confirmed COVID-19 cases in the country, the Ministry of Health has reported. Over 20,217 doctors, nurses and medical personnel have been diagnosed with the virus, almost doubling the total reported two weeks earlier.
