16,872 Deaths, 142,690 Cases

The Ministry of Health reported 424 new deaths from COVID-19 raising the death toll to 16,872 nationwide while a further 3,494 cases were added since yesterday bringing the total figure to 142,690.

In today’s briefing, Deputy Minister of Health Hugo López-Gatell said Mexico City and the State of Mexico accumulate almost half of the confirmed national cases to date. He noted that in Baja California the spread of disease is slowing.  The official said Tijuana is reporting good progress with fewer cases, while in Mexicali cases are rising. “In the same state there may be differences in how the epidemic behaves in each city,” he said.

From June 15 to 21, the epidemiological traffic light will gradually change to orange in 16 of the 32 states.

President proposes 10 points

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador presented 10 key points to get out of the COVID-19 isolation and face the new reality with recommendations ranging from having good habits to preventing racism.

During his Saturday video message, the president said that to start going out safely people must: keep informed on sanitary provisions and being independent; act with optimism; turn their backs on selfishness; get away from consumerism; prevent disease; lose weight and avoid stress and addictions; defend the right to enjoy nature; eat well; exercise; eradicate racism; classism and sexism; seek a path of spirituality.

López Obrador pointed out that we all most be familiarized with the sanitary measures implemented by the Ministry of Health.

 

4,401 deaths in Mexico City

Mexico City Head of Government Claudia Sheinbaum reported 35,272 confirmed cases and 4,401 deaths from COVID-19, after 1,915 infections and 235 more deaths were recorded. Sheinbaum said over 48,450 microcredits worth MX$484.5 million have been dispersed to support small businesses affected by the pandemic crisis. A further 39,972 public spaces were sanitized and 13,170 food and medical support packages were delivered to people diagnosed with COVID-19, she said.

 

Global GDP to drop at least 6 percent

The OECD forecasted two scenarios for the world economy in 2020, and in both cases all economies show contractions. For Mexico, the worst-case scenario is an 8.6 percent contraction.
