6,288 New Cases Sets New Record

The Ministry of Health reported 6,288 more COVID-19 positive cases than yesterday, a new record for a daily report, and which increased the national total to 191,410 confirmed infections. A further 793 deaths were also recorded bringing the total to 23,377 nationwide.

During today’s briefing Director of Epidemiology José Luis Alomía said there are now24,387 cases active cases, while general occupation of beds is at 46 percent nationwide and occupation of beds with ventilators (for critically ill patients) is at 38 percent.

Regarding today’s magnitude 7.5 earthquake Deputy Minister of Health Hugo López-Gatell said although the government must be prepared for any natural phenomena, society is the majority and must be ready in all aspects to secure an effective response.

Authorities said each family must have an emergency back pack with basic personal and communication items ready at all times, and also do personal drills to assess how long it takes them to leave home during an emergency.

AMLO invited to White House

US President Donald Trump said he plans to receive his Mexican counterpart Andrés Manuel López Obrador at the White House soon. “I want to thank the President of Mexico. I think he will come to Washington quite soon, to the White House,” Trump said during a visit to Yuma, Arizona, to review the progress of the border wall. No further details on the invitation or topics to be discussed were announced.

 

Antonio Dovalí Refinery resumes after earthquake

After the 7.5 magnitude earthquake with an epicenter in Oaxaca, the Antonio Dovalí Refinery in Salina Cruz stopped activities for a few hours and entered a temporary “preventive discharge” phase. The PEMEX facility had also to extinguish a fire. "At the moment operations are normal,” PEMEX reported at 3 p.m. local time.

 

Trade plunges 18.5 percent year-on-year globally

The World Trade Organization (WTO) estimates a fall of 18.5 percent year-on-year in product trade globally in 2Q 2020, ruling out its worst scenario previously projected. Initial estimates for the second quarter, during which the Covid-19 coronavirus and related containment measures affected much of the world's population.

 

Consumer confidence falls

In the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, consumer confidence decreased 13.2 units in May compared to the level registered in the same month last year, reaching 31.1 points, its lowest level since January 2017 and its sixth consecutive decrease, according to INEGI figures.

 

New campaign for the Caribbean

The Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council seeks to reactivate tourism in the Mexican Caribbean in the face of the coronavirus pandemic, with the launch of the Mexican Caribbean: The Best of Two Worlds campaign. “The tourism sector has certifications, state airports have new protocols, as well as in shuttles and taxis,” said Darío Flota, the Council´s head.

 

SECTUR asks not to cheapen Quintana Roo

Minister of Tourism (SECTUR) head Miguel Torruco, made a call to bet on exclusivity and not “cheapen” destinations such as Cancun and the Riviera Maya, before the launch of offers and discounts to reactivate various destinations after the relaxation of measurements by the coronavirus pandemic.

 

39,332 cases, 584 deaths among health workers

Ministry of Health reported that 39,332 health workers became infected with COVID-19-19, as well as 584 deaths so far. Of these, 41 percent are nurses and 30 percent are doctors.
