Bayer Expands Lerma Plant to Strengthen Regional Production
Bayer is advancing its manufacturing capabilities in Mexico by expanding its plant in Lerma, State of Mexico. The expansion is backed by a previously announced investment of MX$1.1 billion (US$55 million). This development aims to enhance the facility’s production capacity to serve markets in Latin America and North America while solidifying its position as a global innovation hub.
“The Lerma plant exemplifies Bayer’s investment in strategic infrastructure to meet the growing demands of global markets. Our vision is to strengthen operations in Mexico while fostering economic and social development, alongside innovation and sustainability,” says Julio Triana, Board Member, Bayer.
The facility, operational since 1997, plays a vital role in Bayer’s over-the-counter (OTC) product supply chain, producing well-known medications such as Aspirin and Alka-Seltzer. These products serve both the domestic market and key international markets, including the United States, Canada, Brazil, and Colombia.
“This collaboration between the public and private sectors drives economic growth and creates opportunities for our community. It strengthens the state’s economy and positions us as a leader in innovation and sustainability,” says Delfina Gómez, Governor of the State of Mexico.
The expansion will allow the plant to produce between 100 million and 140 million units annually by 2030, cementing its position as one of the leading production sites in the region. It is expected to generate 350 temporary construction jobs and an additional 100 direct positions by 2030. The Lerma plant’s enhanced infrastructure aims to support the company’s global mission of “Health for all, hunger for none,” while fostering collaboration with regional stakeholders to drive sustainable growth.
The expansion marks a significant chapter in Bayer’s partnership with Mexico, reflecting the country’s role as a strategic ally in the company’s mission. Bayer has established a significant presence in Mexico, operating eight production facilities and three administrative sites across the country, with its headquarters located in Mexico City. With about 4,500 employees, Bayer Mexico is one of the most significant foreign subsidiaries of the global Bayer group.
In Mexico, Bayer’s activities target patients, healthcare professionals, consumers, and farmers. For example, on Dec. 5, 2024, Bayer launched its digital agriculture platform, FieldView, in Mexico. The platform aims to transform the agricultural sector by offering farmers data-driven tools to optimize crop management, enhance efficiency, and support decision-making throughout the crop cycle, as reported by MBN.
