Mexico's legislation for the development, production and marketing of cannabis-derived pharmaceuticals creates a great economic opportunity. However, much remains to be done, agreed panelists on Day 1 of Mexico Health Summit. With cannabis’ medicinal use legalized and its recreational use soon to be regulated, Guillermo Nieto, President of the Mexican Association of the Cannabis Industry (ANICANN), said this opens a window for pharmaceutical research that can generate patented products both for the domestic and global market. In the panel moderated by Erick Ponce, President of GPIC, Cristina Viruega, Director General of Total Integridad & Certeza International, noted regulation still requires more details to be defined. Product development would also have to be subject to regular pharmaceutical standards. The most promising area, added Fernando Becerril, Senior Partner at Becerril, Coca & Becerril (BC&B), is the legalization of recreational use of cannabis as it will provide greater opportunities for Mexico’s entrepreneurs.
