Mexico’s National Council of Science and Technology (CONACYT) and the National Institute of Public Health (INSP) allied to implement a national educational strategy to strengthen research in public health. Mexico’s Ministry of Health attested the signing of the agreement.

During the signing, Minister of Health Jorge Alcocer Varela highlighted that public research needs a perspective that benefits rural populations to ensure their access to health services. “Work has to be done from the field and not from desks to benefit society through a process of innovation in the public health and agriculture agenda to train a new generation of professionals with highly scientific, humanistic rigor, gender perspective, multiculturalism and social justice,” said Alcocer.

The partnership aims to design and implement a strategy to promote the participation of students from over 20 educational and science institutions. Both entities have committed to promote new research models focused on prevention and an integral outlook of health. The project aims to train new professionals that will direct their work towards the most pressing needs of communities in Mexico, such as environmental and social inequities.

“The biggest immediate institutional challenge is to reframe the training of professionals with an integrative and culturally relevant vision regarding health,” said Eduardo Lazcano, Director General, INSP.

The project will focus on boosting institutional initiatives that will consolidate the priorities of CONACYT’s National Strategic Programs (Pronaces) and on the promotion of new training and research models in public health. The alliance will also promote research initiatives for the integration and disclosure of health information and initiatives that will promote the optimization of health data.

The alliance will be supported by the National Network of Clinical Research (RNIC) and the Network of National Laboratories. All of the involved actors are working to promote access to integral public health services based on scientific research and evidence.

“In light of the challenge posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, CONACYT has boosted scientific research with social impact,” said María Elena Álvarez-Buylla, Director General, CONACYT. For example, CONACYT is helping in the development of the Patria COVID-19 vaccine that is expected to be ready by 2023. Also, the CONACYT recently signed an agreement with the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) to develop biomedical technology to support scientific research. The project is designed to strengthen scientific and technological sovereignty within the health system, as reported by MBN.
