On May 29, the World Digestive Health Day is observed to raise awareness on the impact digestive health has on well-being. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is essential to preserve and enhance digestive health. However, the health hurdles presented by the SARS-CoV-2 virus have rendered the pursuit of this goal increasingly challenging.

A digestive system in good condition efficiently digests food, while supporting a harmonious microbiota and a resilient immune system, as reported by Centro Médico ABC. The microbiota of the intestines encompasses a collective population of living microorganisms that inhabit the digestive system, which is crucial for immune system development and optimal nutrition, according to Revista de Gastroenterología de México.

Digestive problems affect a considerable segment of Mexico’s adult population. About 22% of individuals deal with constipation, 20% experience gastroesophageal reflux, 17% are diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and up to 15% grapple with dyspepsia, as reported by Medix. These conditions can have a substantial impact on an individual's quality of life and overall well-being.

Moreover, digestive health has a close connection with mental well-being. Psychological factors can influence the physiology of the gastrointestinal tract. Simultaneously, stress, depression and other psychosocial factors can impact the movement and contractions of the gastrointestinal tract, leading to pain and bowel disturbances.

Those affected by COVID-19 have a heightened vulnerability to develop gastrointestinal disorders. These may encompass liver complications, acute pancreatitis, irritable bowel syndrome, acid reflux and ulcers in the stomach or upper intestinal tract. “There is still much to learn about the long-term effects of COVID-19 and the healthcare industry must be prepared to adapt and provide support to those in need," says Carlo Andrés Brions, Medical Director, Quest Diagnostics, to MBN.

A healthy digestive system is attainable through practical measures, such as avoiding smoking and maintaining a healthy weight through balanced nutrition and regular exercise. A diet with fiber, fruits, vegetables and whole grains supports digestion. Regular physical activity aids in digestion, as does stress reduction. By incorporating these strategies, it is possible to actively promote and maintain a healthy digestive system, according to Harvard Health Publishing.
The market for digestive health products has experienced substantial growth on a global scale. This market is expected to exhibit a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.2% from 2023 to 2030, says Grand View Research. This expansion can be attributed to the rising demand for fortified and nutritional food additives, which serves as a significant driver for the market's growth. In Mexico, the regulatory framework allows for the availability of food supplements without a prescription. These products are freely accessible, making it easier for individuals to incorporate digestive health supplements into their daily routines.
