Environment Testing for Greater Health SafetyBy Miriam Bello | Tue, 10/20/2020 - 12:29
Q: How much has Analitek’s life sciences area grown in Mexico to date?
A: We have experienced unusual growth as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Comparing August 2020 with August 2019, we have doubled our life sciences sales, making this the most successful area of our business. We dabbled in the clinical and research market. Prior to the pandemic, we would solely focus on research. Analitek’s sales for this area were driven by automation of clinical laboratories that were working on COVID-19 testing and looking to grow their capacity.
This opportunity in the clinical and diagnostics market has a great deal of potential to keep us competitive after the pandemic. I see the current situation as the tip of the iceberg of all the needs that will be exposed over time. In Mexico, clinical studies and diagnostics have always been a key issue. However, COVID-19 put more attention on the subject and added to the preexisting ailments of the Mexican population.
Globally, we continue to experience a high number of contagions from COVID-19. Additionally, the influenza season is coming, meaning that clinical research will have a busy and long schedule.
Q: As a maintenance provider, how has demand for your services been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic?
A: Unfortunately, the scenario remains the same. Research centers do not prioritize maintenance projects because they work with limited budgets. However, clinical laboratories do because they are used to having this service covered.
Q: What advances have been made regarding regulatory measures for calibration and maintenance in Mexico?
A: Time has stopped moving for regulatory processes over the past two years. We have not experienced any advance, or regression, on regulatory measures for calibration and device maintenance in Mexico.
Q: How did Analitek positioned itself in the clinical research market?
A: The clinical research market was completely new for us. Analitek’s expertise in high-quality molecular biology technology was a significant asset to start dabbling into this market. This demonstrated our deep knowledge regarding scientific practices. The pandemic demanded high-quality, complex technology and this was something we were already working with and had the expertise to offer to a different market. Our strong providers and engineering database were also a plus to grow in the sector. Our market niche is focused on high-technology implementation to increase sample volume and support clients in new types of analyses.
Analitek is working with three of the largest research laboratories, with most of their work focusing on RNA extraction for COVID-19 analysis. From June to August 2020, our equipment and reagents had a penetration of around 30 percent in all RNA COVID-19 tests applied in Mexico. Just in August, 300,000 samples from RNA COVID-19 tests were extracgted with our kits. We have the capacity to reach 1 million samples should the country need it.
Q: What are Analitek’s near-term goals?
A: Aside from pushing forward our clinical research area with the integration of high-tech solutions to large laboratories, we want to develop “Biosafety,” a laboratory for environmental testing of SARS-CoV-2 to ensure a safe return to work for every company in Mexico, regardless of the sector. Analitek has a different concept of COVID-19 that goes beyond human testing, which is why we are moving toward environment testing for air, surfaces, face masks, drains or any contagion point that can endanger the people who will perform their activities in a certain space. This basically enables us to detect the virus when it is not yet active in a person or before the person develops any symptoms. Analitek delivers the results within 24 hours, which is incredibly valuable as it reduces risks of contagion.
