First ZAP-X Radiosurgery System to Be Installed in Mexico
ZAP Surgical Systems will install its ZAP-X Gyroscopic Radiosurgery platform at the Gray Medical Institute, a new outpatient oncology center in San Pedro, Nuevo Leon. This marks the arrival of the system in Mexico and represents a shift in the delivery of advanced brain tumor treatment in the country.
Scheduled to open this summer, Gray Medical aims to offer a fully integrated oncology service model, including imaging, diagnostics, radiosurgery, and infusion therapy within a single facility. The ZAP-X installation is expected in the fourth quarter of 2025, and will support the institute’s objective of providing accessible and coordinated cancer care outside the traditional hospital setting.
The ZAP-X platform provides non-invasive treatment for brain tumors and other neurological conditions using stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). The system is designed to treat patients without incisions or anesthesia and is typically performed during a single outpatient visit. It features a gyroscopic dual-gantry design that enables radiation delivery from thousands of unique angles. This approach is intended to enhance precision while minimizing exposure to surrounding healthy brain tissue and critical structures such as the brain stem and optic nerves.
“ZAP-X is enabling us to bring world-class radiosurgery out of the big hospitals and into the community,” says Erik Edmundo Pérez, Head of Radiation Oncology Services, Gray Medical. “This not only improves accessibility and convenience for patients but also establishes a new benchmark for cancer care in Mexico.”
While conventional radiation systems require shielded treatment rooms, ZAP-X eliminates the need for such infrastructure, allowing for installation in outpatient centers and reducing associated construction costs. The system also operates with a modern linear accelerator, avoiding the use of radioactive Cobalt-60.
“The collaboration underscores our shared vision of expanding precision SRS beyond the traditional hospital model and directly into the hands of forward-thinking outpatient centers like Gray Medical,” says John Adler, CEO, ZAP Surgical Systems.
