In the healthcare sector, innovation and technology must go beyond adoption and center on the patient to push providers to create their own solutions, agreed experts during yesterday’s LATAM Healthcare Innovation Summit 2022.

Organized by the Bamberg Foundation, the event hosted representatives from some of the largest health players of the industry in Mexico, including Christus Muguerza, Médica Sur and Centro Médico ABC. Also present were high level industry representatives of the Mexican healthcare industry such as Cristóbal Thompson from AMIIF, Victor Medina from HL7, José Flores from CANIFARMA, José Carlos Ferreyra from ANAFAM and Juan Francisco Millán from CETIFARMA. International representatives included Gloria Lugo from the Inter-American Development Bank, Sindy Pahola Pulgarín from National Institute for Drug and Food Surveillance (INVIMA) and Omidres Pérez from International Organization for Telemedicine and Telehealth.

During the 12 panels and presentations, these representatives met with public health officials to discuss strategies to digitalize, innovate and interconnect the health system, demonstrating that providers from all the industry are moving toward patient-centric solutions based on prevention.

Participants agreed on the need for joint cooperation to expand the benefits of technology to all corners of the region, as well as to create policies that make this possible and facilitate provider’s efforts to spread innovation among the Latin American population.

The life sciences sector has long been a source and generator of economic development. In 2020, global investment in clinical research amounted to US$250 million following a steady CAGR compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.3 percent over the past five years. “When speaking of medical research, we are talking about economic investment, regional research and development by innovation clusters, technology transfers and early access to innovative therapies,” said AMIIF’s Thompson.

Due to its importance, innovation and tech must be included in educational practices so that regional talent is able to develop and scale solutions easily, bringing locally-developed solutions to the population.

During the event, participants also highlighted the importance of interconnectivity for the development of value-based health systems. “To achieve this, tech providers and hospitals must be passionate about providing security and services,” said Juan Caceres, CEO, Aidicare.
