INPRFM Leads Mental Health Research, Specialist Training

The National Institute of Psychiatry Ramón de la Fuente Muñiz (INPRFM) highlighted advances in mental health research and specialist training during its 40th Annual Research Meeting, which coincided with World Mental Health Day on Oct. 10. The institute also presented the Fundación Ramón de la Fuente Award to outstanding researchers.

The INPRFM employs 114 career researchers and 18 staff investigators, with 104 affiliated with the National System of Researchers (SNI), and oversees 179 active research protocols across ten lines of study. Its publications place it third in Mexico in the H-index of citations, behind only the National Institute of Public Health and the National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition Salvador Zubirán.

The institute provides over 100,000 outpatient consultations annually and short-stay hospital care for 600 patients, many of whom participate in research. INPRFM also trains 177 medical residents and 220 students in nursing, master’s, and doctoral programs in medical and public health sciences, in collaboration with the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM).

The meeting, held on Oct. 8–10, covered mental health in healthcare personnel and migrants, experimental models for schizophrenia, youth and community mental health, telepsychiatry, and eating behavior disorders. The event underscored INPRFM’s position as a leading center for mental health research and specialist training in Mexico.
