López Gatell Warns of New Outbreaks

The reopening of activities in June will bring new outbreaks of COVID-19, Deputy Minister of Health Hugo López-Gatell said in today’s special briefing. “It is not guaranteed in any way, in Mexico or in any other country, that at the time the reopening there won’t be new outbreaks,” he said.

The official pointed out that the number of infections will rise as more people are returning to public spots and mobility increases. López-Gatell stressed that restrictions on mobility cannot continue. “It is impossible and potentially harmful to pretend that immobility can be maintained for too long,” he said.

A daily increase of 3,329 COVID- 19 positive cases and 190 deaths were reported in today’s briefing. Tabasco joined the states that have 3,000 cases or more.

President calls for discipline

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador asked people to keep abiding to social distancing measures, since the restart of activities is close after the COVID-19 pandemic peak. “We have to continue being disciplined and following the recommendations. We are soon going to enter the stage where we can resume activities,” he said on a video message recorded at the Moorish Hall in National Palace. The president acknowledged that Mexico is experiencing a difficult time due to the increasing rate of infections and deaths but said he was optimistic on the strategy to contain the epidemic.

 

More ventilators delivered

Over 45 ventilators respirators were delivered to the National Institute of Respiratory Diseases (INER), Mexico City Head of Government Claudia Sheinbaum said. “Fourty-five more ventilators to INER to expand hospital capacity of Intensive Care Units,” she reported.

 

366 Mexicans have died in the US

At least 366 Mexicans have died in the US from COVID-19, the Ministry of Foreign Relations (SRE) has reported. New York is the state with most cases with 671,  followed by California with 103. The agency also reported that 369 are Mexicans infected.

 

3 million masks from China

A plane with medical supplies arrived at Mexico from China, Minister of Foreign Affairs (SRE) Marcelo Ebrard reported. This is the 13th flight in the airlift between Mexico and China. In today’s cargo there were 80 ventilators and 3 million masks.
