Technology and digitalization are shifting many aspects of everyday life, helping many people to address problems large and small. The health industry is implementing these new tools to streamline traditional tedious methods to provide clinical care, improving care practices and helping patients treat and manage their illnesses.

The COVID-19 pandemic sped up the introduction of blooming technologies in medical devices, greatly increasing the use of telemedicine and the personalization of tools based on digital data and AI, said María Salido, CEO, Social Diabetes, to MBN. These tools could be a boon for those who have to manage a chronic disease.

Health systems in the world face many difficulties managing chronic illnesses. Globally, 537 million adults currently have diabetes and it is expected for this number to increase to 643 million by the next decade. These large numbers of patients have cost global health systems US$966 billion in health expenditure, according to IDF Diabetes Atlas.

Information is essential for the diabetic patient. Many care providers are introducing tailored learning environments and other integral services to educate patients and help them manage their disease. To benefit the patient, an integral learning platform should prioritize engagement, personalization, precision and collaboration, said Salido.

Other technology developers are offering daily analysis in real time, aiming to change the lives of thousands of patients. However, the use of these technologies has been set back by the lack of regulations and availability. The regularization of this technology is a must to ensure user’s safety but in Mexico, regulation is still in its early stages. As of 2022, there is no regulatory guidance in the country setting the standard for the use of several tools such as AI in medical devices, complicating investment in this type of technology, as reported by MBN.
