Mexico Confronts Measles Outbreak As Cases Continue to Increase

Mexico is grappling with a growing number of measles cases, with 416 suspected cases and 22 confirmed cases. The country is just one of many seeing an increase in measles outbreaks, which have also significantly impacted countries such as Yemen, Pakistan, India, Thailand, and Ethiopia.

The National Committee for Epidemiological Surveillance (CONAVE) reports that the 22 confirmed cases in Mexico this year include two imported cases and 20 related to previous imports, with the majority concentrated in Chihuahua and Oaxaca. According to CONAVE this marks a concerning development, as measles cases in Mexico had been largely absent in recent years. The country saw no confirmed cases of measles in 2021, 2022, or 2023, despite reporting suspected cases during that time.

CONAVE’s report highlights the demographic pattern of those affected by measles, with 68% predominance of cases in males and children aged five to nine years old. Of the confirmed cases, 86% lacked a vaccination history, and only a small percentage had received one or two doses of the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine (SRP).

The World Health Organization (WHO) and CONAVE have underscored the critical role of vaccination campaigns, particularly targeting vulnerable groups such as children aged one to nine and unvaccinated adolescents up to 19 years old. The Mexican health system has ramped up surveillance measures to monitor and contain potential outbreaks. The National Surveillance System (SINAVE) aims to ensure that suspected cases are identified and investigated promptly. Health personnel are being urged to focus surveillance efforts on high-risk areas, particularly near borders and tourist destinations, where imported cases are most likely.

Immediate actions in response to confirmed cases include thorough epidemiological investigations, laboratory diagnostics, and containment measures, such as localized vaccination campaigns to limit further transmission. CONAVE stresses the importance of communication and coordination between health units and public health laboratories to ensure a swift and comprehensive public health response.
