The National Center of Gender Equality and Health Reproduction (CNEGSR) published guidelines to unify procedures in labor-recovery rooms. This initiative aligns with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and aims to reduce maternal and perinatal death.

These guidelines aim to reduce maternal and perinatal death while ensuring the respect of women’s sexual and reproductive rights. The suggestions aim to strengthen public health actions to transform spaces, use resources efficiently and have qualified health professionals. CNEGSR’s measures are based on human rights and follow a gender perspective and intercultural approach, among other principles.

According to the Ministry of Health, the guidelines align with the achievement of the SDG agenda, which aims to reduce the global maternal mortality rate (MMR) to less than 70 per 100,000 live births by 2030. Mexico is expected to reduce its 2010 MMR of 46 per 100,000 live births by at least two thirds. In Mexico, maternal death affects mainly those living in the poorest regions and most of those affected belong to indigenous communities, as reported by the UN Population Fund. Chiapas, State of Mexico, Veracruz, Jalisco and Oaxaca are the entities with the highest rate of maternal death.

To protect women’s sexual rights, the CNEGSR offers Safe Abortion Services (SAS) following a gender perspective. Within these services, professionals provide girls, teenagers and adult women safe technologies and treatments to reduce abortion complications. While some Mexican states legalized abortion, accessing this medical service in legal and safe conditions is still a challenge for many women. Unsafe abortions might cause a range of problems that affect the quality of life and wellbeing of women, with some experiencing life-threatening complications, as reported by MBN. The CNEGSR offers contraception services to prevent unwanted pregnancies. According to WHO, 25 percent of maternal deaths could be prevented if all women who do not desire to become mothers could access modern contraception methods.

The CNEGSR also aims to prevent Sexual Transmission Diseases (STDs) and treat women who have suffered from sexual violence.  The Specialized Services for Gender and Sexual Violence Attention offer psychological attention, emergency contraception and prophylaxis to prevent STDs. In 2021, eight out of the 10 STDs commonly occurring in Mexico reportedly increased; syphilis was the highest with an increase of 82.3 percent.

In observance of the 2022 International Women’s Day, the CNEGSR invited all institutions and authorities to commit to guarantee sexual and reproductive rights to all women trough specific actions based on scientific evidence.
