President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced the incorporation of the Health Services of Nayarit (SSN) into the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) making Nayarit the first Mexican state to federalize its health sector.

The president met with members of federal and state cabinets including Nayarit Governor Miguel Ángel Navarro within the Thirteenth Military Zone for a meeting titled “Plan of Support for Nayarit.” Adán Augusto López, Minister of Governance, announced the signed agreement between Governor Navarro Quintero and Zoé Robledo, Director General, IMSS. The decision will bring free medical attention to all individuals regardless of whether or not they are IMSS or ISSSTE rightsholders. “The decentralization that took place during the neo-liberal period was wrong. They left the Federal Health Ministry like a shell, to administer the resources that were sent to all states and many times, that money was not used for medical services. It was sidetracked, it was stolen,” the president said.

Jorge Alcocer, Health Minister, announced that the first five hospitals to be incorporated to IMSS include San Francisco, Tondoroque, Rosamorada, Tuxpan and Hospital De La Mujer. President López Obrador said this model will serve as a test to incorporate all state entities into the federal health system. Similarly, the nation’s armed forces will be in charge of distributing medicine in the state, which will serve as a trial for the same procedure to be established throughout the country. At the moment, the armed forces are already in charge of the distribution of COVID-19 vaccines across the country.

“We are starting a trial for the armed forces to bring medicine to Nayarit and deliver it to health centers. We will begin the trial today to see if we will do it in the entire country,” the president said. This transformation is also expected to end corruption in the delivery of medicine by focusing on the “last mile” of the delivery process.

Governor Navarro also announced that Nayarit inherited a hospital from IMSS tied to a public-private association agreement. As a result, state authorities will pay MX$40 million (US$1.9 million) monthly for its construction and maintenance.

President López Obrador also announced that the regulation of so-called “chocolate cars” will also reach Nayarit. This comes less than a week after Michoacan was also brought into the decree, which originally only applied to the country’s seven northern border states.
