As global respiratory health challenges continue to grow, NTM Info & Research (NTMir) is urging healthcare providers, patients, and policymakers to recognize the rising threat of nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) lung disease, a condition often underdiagnosed despite its increasing incidence.

In recognition of World NTM Awareness Day, observed annually on Aug. 4, the nonprofit organization highlighted the need for early detection and better disease management. NTM lung disease is caused by environmental bacteria commonly found in water and soil. Although many people are exposed to these microbes, individuals with underlying lung conditions face a significantly higher risk of infection.

Recent data shows a concerning rise in NTM cases, with an annual growth rate of over 8.2%. Older women and individuals with chronic respiratory diseases are especially vulnerable. The economic burden per patient can exceed US$30,000 annually, reflecting both the delay in diagnosis and the limited treatment options currently available.

“NTM lung disease remains one of the most misunderstood and misdiagnosed conditions in respiratory care,” says Amy Leitman, President, NTMir. “The sooner symptoms are recognized, the greater the opportunity to prevent lasting lung damage and improve patient outcomes.”

The disease often coexists with bronchiectasis, creating a cycle of persistent infection, declining lung function, and years of inadequate care. Common symptoms include a chronic cough, fatigue, unexplained weight loss, and shortness of breath, signs that may be overlooked or mistaken for other conditions.

This year’s awareness campaign, themed “Recognize. Respond. Rise Together,” centers on the importance of early diagnosis, improved patient education, and increased investment in research and innovation. NTMir is working to expand access to educational resources, support global patient networks, and advocate for policy changes to meet the unmet needs of the NTM community.

By calling attention to the condition’s growing impact, NTMir aims to shift the narrative surrounding NTM lung disease and promote timely, effective responses across the healthcare system
