There are several views on medical tourism in Mexico but it is important to realize that to talk about Mexico is to talk about a country with different styles and particularities. There are characteristics that naturally drive states toward specific activities, be it services or industry development, agricultural activities and in some cases tourism.

Yucatan is a state that for over a century has had a perhaps limited inclination toward industry or big companies but it has some of the most natural attractions in the country, positioning its tourism offerings above destinations that do not have beaches, haciendas, cultural sites or the Mayan civilization that calls to foreigners so much.

Unlike other states, Yucatan does not have a natural terrestrial border that would have helped patients, mostly from the US, come for medical services. Still, without a doubt its capital Merida has become the most prosperous city of  the southeast with amazing results in health, education and safety. This has turned the city into the favorite destination of southern Mexican inhabitants to enjoy the quality services this destination offers. Every day the clinics and hospitals have inhabitants from Campeche, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, Veracruz or Chiapas who specifically come to undergo procedures that can be ambulatory, such as dental health, or for more complex treatments, such as for cancer and cardiovascular illnesses.

Being connected with both the East and West coasts of the US, through Houston and Dallas, the proximity to Belize and Guatemala and the opening of direct flights from Merida to Toronto and Havana have strengthened the number not only of holiday makers and business travelers, but also medical tourists. The notable quality and training of over 4,500 doctors and the infrastructure of the city has allowed it to diversify its hospitality offerings from boutique hotels to all business suites.

Before the arrival of tourists from Mexico, the east of the US and Canada, the state government launched during this six- year term the platform Yucatan Healthcare that has brought.
