In “The Week in Coronavirus,” WHO has now declared the virus a pandemic. From Tom Hanks to Jair Bolsonaro, no one seems to be safe from contagion and stock markets know it, as they have been resenting the presence of COVID-19 since January.

Don’t forget the sanitizer. Now, here is the week in health!

NATIONAL

President Lopez Obrador calls for hugs and peace, while WHO calls for greater commitment from the country to control the virus. Director General of WHO Tedros Adhanom said COVID-19 is manageable but countries need to commit and show strong sanitary measures.

SCT is already meeting airlines to evaluate their flight strategy as the pandemic affects aviation dynamics worldwide.

Both the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies are taking preventive measures as their meetings are quite crowed.

The President of the Mexican Stock Exchange (BMV) tested positive for COVID-19.

Many educational institutions are also taking preventive contagion measures although the Ministry of Health says they should not rush into these.

Passengers declare that there are no sanitary measures at many Mexican airports.

On the plus side, Roche decided to invest US$600 million in Mexico in 2021 for oncological research and other medical areas.

INTERNATIONAL

CNN published a real-time map that shows the global situation of COVID-19.

Italy is the country that has taken the most dramatic measures to prevent contagion after doubling the number of infected people in a number of days. The whole country is basically in quarantine.

In Spain, President Pedro Sánchez declared a state of emergency due to COVID-19.

Argentina cancels flights for 30 days but declared a sanitary emergency for a year.

Colombia also joins the list of Latin-American countries that have declared a sanitary emergency.

Panama doubles the number of infected people in just one day.

Venezuela presents the first cases of the virus

Broadway and Disneyland are also taking measures to avoid what could be a massive contagion. Broadway shows have been cancelled for a month and in California, Disneyland will be closed until further notice.

WTO cancelled their Ministerial Conference taking place in Kazakhstan this June. 

Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson and Sophie Gregoire, among other celebrities are testing positive for COVID-19.

Although he had been confirmed as a COVID-19 case, Jair Bolsonaro shared on his facebook that he tested negative to the test.

In China, COVID-19 cases are finally receding.
