The second edition of the "Building the Future – A Call to Action" Forum, scheduled to take place on February 27, 28, and 29 in Mexico City, will feature the participation of national and international experts in sustainable construction. Through the examination of pivotal concepts like resilient architecture and biodiversity in real estate, the organizers aim to discern opportunities to bolster Mexico’s sustainable construction market.
The event was orchestrated by SUMe, a non-profit association committed to bolstering the sustainable construction market in Mexico, in collaboration with Saint-Gobain, a French enterprise specialized in the design, manufacture, and distribution of materials and services for the construction and industrial sectors, and Green Business Certification, a US organization dedicated to providing certification and credentialing services in sustainability. This collaboration underscores the growing international cooperation in promoting sustainable practices within the construction industry.
For the organizers, the forum encompasses five objectives: to facilitate the exchange of high-level knowledge and experiences in sustainable construction, accelerate the decarbonization of the construction sector, and incentivize the formation of strategic alliances to address the global climate emergency. The latter goal is sought to be achieved though the promotion of action to help develop more sustainable and resilient communities. Ultimately, the forum’s overarching purpose is to identify challenges and opportunities within Mexico’s emerging sustainable construction market.
Sustainability Trends in Construction for 2024
In 2024, the construction industry is expected to undergo substantial transformations due to the imperative to actively contribute to the global sustainable development movement by adopting Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards, according to a Amanco Wavin study.
In anticipation of this transformation, the study expects that the construction industry will need to enhance its integration of sustainable materials, such as certified wood, environmentally friendly concrete, and renewable energy systems, including solar panels and wind turbines. Additionally, there is a continued focus on developing climate-resilient buildings capable of mitigating the impacts of extreme weather events such as storms, floods, and earthquakes, underscores the firm. In response to these challenges, modular construction has gained traction as it enables structures to be built quickly and efficiently, noted the report.
The development of smart buildings equipped with sensors and automation systems that adapt to users' needs is a growing trend that will continue in the years to come according to the study. Consequently, Amanco Wavin foresees a surge in the adoption of cutting-edge tools such as robotics, artificial intelligence, data analysis, 3D printing, augmented reality, and the Internet of Things.
“It is essential to understand and address consumer demands for the success of the industry's business and the well-being of people. Therefore, it is crucial for both consumers and construction companies to stay updated on ESG trends and be ready to adapt to the evolving demands and expectations of the market,” says Mónica Pinillos, Branding and Communication Director, Amanco Wavin Mexico and Central America.
