Konstantinos Panagiotou, CEO, Doppelmayr Mexico, announced the company is officially handing over the management of Cablebus Line 1, which goes from Indios Verdes to Cuautepec, to Mexico City’s government. The transaction is carried out a year after the system started operations, running successfully without notable incidents or cabin failures.

According to Panagiotou, the company delivers an internationally certified and self-sustainable cableway system that transports 50,000 passengers a day, which is almost 50 percent more than was expected. The company considers the Cablebus System to be Mexico City’s safest, most efficient and most advanced transportation system.

“We inaugurated it during the first week of June 2021. In the contract, we agreed on a year term to transfer the technology in order to train [the government of] Mexico City to operate the system… I believe that the Minister of Economy, Andrés Lajous, will announce the handing over in the coming days,” said Panagiotou.

Panagiotou said that the system has not presented failures. Nevertheless, it has stopped operating several times as a preventive measure during storms, earthquakes, high winds, grid blackouts and miss-use from users. He said that the system has over 3,000 sensors to monitor possible incidents, which stop the whole system if there is an anomaly.

Line 1 has three power generators. The main unit operates every day, the others function as emergency generators and are activated after 30 seconds of in case of energy shortage. Since the units are all diesel-powered, they can work for hours and, in some cases, days.

Panagiotou highlighted the technology used in Line 1, which is an innovative D-Line electromechanical system that integrates safety mechanisms. He added that construction processes were carried out following rigorous quality control, certified by a third party, the certification giant TÜV SÜD. The line’s features make maintenance works easier while reducing their frequency. At the same time, it allows the system to grant users better accessibility, a speed of 6m/s and noise reduction, which is key for urban areas.

The system will suspend services between June 6 and 12, 2022 to carry out the annual inspection to meet the TÜV SÜD recertification requirements. During the inspection, pulley systems, engines, sensors and the cable itself will be examined.

Doppelmayr announced its intention to participate in the Cablebus Line 3 tenders. The third line will go from the Metro station Constituyentes to Section Four of Chapultepec Park, with an extension to Vasco de Quiroga.
