The Institute of Social Security and Services for State Workers (ISSSTE) will build a clinic for family medicine and specialties in Los Cabos, Baja California Sur. The clinic, which is expected to open in 1Q24, will also have an operating room, 21 offices and 20 beds to provide healthcare to 40,000 beneficiaries.

The new Family Medicine Clinic with Specialties and an Operating Room (CMFEQ) will involve 8,000m2 of construction. The clinic “will cost MX$509 million (US$27.2 million), an important advance has already been made to the construction company, of MX$175 million (US$9.4 million),” said Pedro Zenterno Santaella, General Director, ISSSTE, via a press release.

The project includes hospitalization areas with a capacity of 20 census beds for adults and minors, a laboratory, areas for dialysis and hemodialysis, an operating room and a pharmacy, among other facilities. Zenterno explained that the aim of the project is for beneficiaries to receive quality healthcare services and decent facilities.

Zenterno also highlighted that the clinic will have a module for hemodynamics that was previously unavailable in the region, which forced patients in need of those services to travel over 175km to the northern city of La Paz for those studies.

The Ministry of Finance (SHCP) reported that Mexico only used 72.4 percent of its public healthcare sector budget during the first 11 months of 2022. The SHCP reported that spending totaled US$11 billion less than budgeted. Healthcare spending reached US$32 billion during that period, which represents a 0.9 percent increase over 2021. The healthcare budget for 2022 amounted to US$43 billion for public administration agencies, infrastructure investments, equipment maintenance, payroll and other expenses involved in providing healthcare services, as reported by MBN.
