The Ministry of Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development (SEDATU) will begin the latest construction stage of the Jaguar Park in Tulum, Quintana Roo. The project seeks to combine nature and archeological sightseeing for visitors.

The latest stage of the Jaguar Park project includes the construction and refurbishing of six public beach accesses, financed through the Urban Improvement Program (PMU) for an investment of MX$189 million (US$10.5 million). The project “protects the natural, cultural and historical wealth of the country,” explains SEDATU via a press release.

Román Meyer Falcón, Head, SEDATU, explained that two new accesses to the beach are being built and that the other four will be rehabilitated. Alongside the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), SEDATU will work on 22,000m2 in the area and construct several landscape projects and spaces to sightsee archaeological remains.

“We are working with hoteliers to reduce the impact of these facilities; we plan to include vegetation and lighting, and standardize the design of the establishments that are already there. The roads that connect with the northern part of the Mayan Train and the most important museum in the region are also being improved,” says Meyer.

The project’s first stage included the construction of a 21km perimeter fence and several spaces for rest at Coba Avenue. The second involves the remodeling of the road to the beaches.

SEDATU previously worked in highly marginalized neighborhoods in Quintana Roo to support housing and other infrastructure projects. Through a different PMU, SEDATU supported the municipalities of Bacalar, Benito Juarez, Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Othon P. Blanco, Solidaridad and Tulum since 2019, in coordination with the National Housing Commission (CONAVI). In Quintana Roo, SEDATU has provided 13,747 direct grants for housing worth MX$729 million (US$40.5).

SEDATU also carried out five social infrastructure works in Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas, to improve public spaces. The project included MX$204 million (US$11.32 million) for infrastructure development in the state. SEDATU is constructing the Patria Nueva Sports Center and the 22 de Noviembre Market, while renovating the central park and surrounding streets, among other projects, as reported by MBN.
