Mexico's data center industry is projected to attract US$18.142 billion in direct investment and reach an installed capacity of 1,516MW by 2030, according to the Mexican Data Center Association (MEXDC). The association also anticipates the sector will contribute over 20,700 direct and nearly 76,000 indirect jobs by the same year, aligning with national development goals.
During MEXDC’s Second Anniversary Press Conference, Amet Novillo, President, MEXDC, reported that the sector’s installed capacity in Mexico stands at 235MW, with an additional 74MW under construction. He added that the sector’s expansion aligns with President Claudia Sheinbaum’s Plan México and her government’s digitalization efforts. He noted the sector is expected to add 20,758 direct jobs and 75,812 indirect positions.
“Over the past two years, MEXDC has signed eight agreements with universities and technical colleges to cultivate the specialized talent required for the high-value jobs this growing sector will generate,” says Adriana Rivera, Executive Director, MEXDC.
MEXDC has grown to over 126 member companies, encompassing operators, service providers, and various equipment and infrastructure suppliers. "The fact that more companies want to be part of MEXDC each month is a palpable sign that endorses our effort and the confidence of organizations in the strength the association has today for the benefit of all players in the country," says Novillo.
Over the past year, MEXDC has focused on creating a roadmap to address the sector's needs through strategic commissions covering talent, energy, sustainability, regulation, and connectivity. The association has also engaged with federal government bodies, including the Ministry of Economy (SE), the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT), and the Digital Transformation Agency, as well as with seven state governments, says Rivera.
MEXDC also partnered with industry groups such as the Mexican Association of Private Industrial Parks (AMPIP), Mexican Energy Association (AME), and international data center associations in Spain, Brazil, and Germany. A significant collaboration agreement was signed with the Mexican Association of Companies in the Construction Installations Sector (AMERIC) to enhance training and quality standards.
Looking ahead, MEXDC will continue to promote the data center industry, strengthen alliances, and monitor public policies related to the energy transition. "We will continue in the search for events, dialogue forums, and business opportunities to continue underscoring the need to strengthen Mexico's digital infrastructure," says Novillo.
MEXDC’s membership represents over 80% of Mexico’s data centers and over 50% of suppliers, but the association aims to attract more companies and amplify their voices, says Rivera. "We are very active, and I think that is what has significantly drawn the ecosystem's attention, leading to our continued growth,” Rivera tells MBN.
