Mexico City’s Major Claudia Sheinbaum announced the reconstruction and rehabilitation of Line 12 of the city’s subway, which suffered a deadly collapse earlier this year.

“Most important is for there to remain an infrastructure, a safe system, a safe line and that construction follows the technical notes and the detailed executive projects developed,” said Sheinbaum. The city government aims to hit the main recovery goals while avoiding future mistakes. To do so, reconstruction activities will follow the recommendations of the Technical Committee for Reinforcement and Rehabilitation, which comprise six main points including the reviews of the reinforcement or replacement of the collapsed twin section. Other key areas will be evaluated and potentially reinforced with “a metallic shoring system and concrete columns to increase their structural capacity.” The committee also highlighted the importance of random inspections in the future as this precedent set new standards for Mexico City’s subway maintenance and security.

The committee continues to evaluate other areas of the subway that were in similar state, as citizens continue to demand higher safety standards for their public transportation. Authorities will also provide several maintenance checks in Mexico City’s public transportation, as governor Sheinbaum tries to prevent further accidents caused by poor safety standards.

Sheinbaum also highlighted that throughout the process, her administration will provide “personalized attention to victims.” The reconstruction will be carried out by the DNV, with the support of the Technical Committee for Reinforcement and Rehabilitation of Line 12 and follow the investigations being carried out by the Attorney General’s Office (FGJ).

The catastrophe, which killed dozens, continues to haunt the city as its citizens demand higher safety standards. Under these circumstances, the government plans to play an essential role as victims’ families and survivors seek justice for themselves and their loved ones.
