The Minister of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation, Jorge Nuño, met with cargo operators and logistics service providers to show them the advantages of the Felipe Angeles International Airport (AIFA) to convince them to move their operations.

According to the government, companies saw the technical and technological advances AIFA offers in person, as well as examined the facilities that feature storage, tax areas and containment zones for dangerous and high-value merchandise, among other features.

The government said that AIFA has more than 62,000m² of infrastructure ready to be used and another 47,500m² to expand operations in a second development stage. SICT stressed that these efforts are made to harmoniously migrate 360,000t of goods from Mexico City International Airport (AICM) to AIFA, which would benefit cargo and logistics operators in the mid and long term.

SICT also reported that visitors inspected the cargo operation area, the land-support vehicles parking lot, platforms for identification of export-import goods, two customs buildings and an office for services, x-ray equipment and merchandise inspection system (PITA), as well as the area for oversized cargo.

Nuño explained that the government promised to move the operations in 108 business days. To achieve this goal, SICT, the Federal Civil Aviation Agency (AFAC) and AIFA will work around the clock. He said it is convenient to focus on the advantages AIFA offers because it allows the government a “fresh start.”

SICT highlighted that AIFA can expand in the future, a benefit that AICM did not have since its operations are saturated and the airport is located in a crowded area.

In the same vein, SICT reported that the primary access route to AIFA, the 14km Camino-Tonanitla road from Ecatepec to AIFA, is almost ready. The highway has three lanes on each side and is 95% finished according to the ministry, which will allow the developers to deliver the project earlier as promised.

In March 2023 AIFA will have operated for one year. However, the airport is still underutilized, as many travelers report entering nearly empty halls. “The army has this huge necessity to deliver quick results regarding AIFA’s growth but aviation does not work that way,” said Humberto Gual, General Secretary, Union of Air Pilots (ASPA).
