Oaxaca Expands Airport to Boost Tourism and Economic Growth
The Governor of Oaxaca, Salomón Jara, has announced the renovation of the Oaxaca International Airport, a project that will strengthen the state's position as a top-tier tourist and investment destination. With an investment of MX$2.12 billion (US$$103.85 million) from Aeropuertos del Sureste (ASUR), the project will transform the airport's infrastructure and enhance regional connectivity.
“This expansion will bring tangible benefits for the people of Oaxaca. With the doubling of visitor arrivals, the economic impact will be significant. Additionally, it will strengthen our connectivity and facilitate foreign trade with increased exports and imports," says Jara.
Jara highlights that the airport terminal will quadruple in size, increasing from 7,000 to 28,000m2, which will allow it to double its operational capacity. He also emphasizes that this renovation is not coincidental but rather a response to Oaxaca's positioning as a strategic investment destination. He shares that the state ranks first in economic growth in the south-southeast region and second nationwide, just behind Durango.
By the end of December 2024, the airport recorded a 5.52% increase in passenger traffic, representing an additional 93,531 travelers. Notably, domestic passenger numbers grew by 5.12%, while international passengers saw a remarkable 20.28% increase, demonstrating Oaxaca's rising appeal on the global stage.
The airport’s general administrator, Jorge Campos, detailed that the renovation and expansion work began in January 2024 and is expected to be completed by December 2028. The improvements will include the modernization of check-in counters, passenger security screening areas, national and international baggage claim areas, immigration modules, customs inspection lines, aircraft parking positions, jet bridges, final waiting lounges, commercial areas, and elevators and escalators.
