The Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport (SICT) explained that the main access road to the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) will reduce travel time for thousands of passengers and will be toll-free.

The main road connecting Mexico City and AIFA will not incur costs for passengers traveling to the airport from its inauguration. SICT did not specify the reasoning behind the decision in its most recent press release.

SICT explained that the objective of the main road is to provide an efficient and fast connection from the Valley of Mexico to AIFA. The three-lane expressway runs in both directions from Ecatepec, State of Mexico, at the Puente de Fierro point to the main access roundabout of AIFA.

The main road involved six primary infrastructure works: the iron bridge, an elevated viaduct, the toll-free junction to Tonanitla, the toll-free road to Tonanitla with its two sections and the Tonanitla junction that connects to the airport. Passengers will be able to enter the highway through two intermediate additions located at the Jaltenco-Heroes de Tecamac junction and at the Tonanitla-Ojo de Agua junction, explained SICT via Twitter. SICT explained that the project was completed in coordination between dependencies and states of the three branches of government.

The main road has a capacity of up to 40,000 vehicles per day and, according to SICT, provides an “agile and comfortable” access for all passengers. The ministry highlighted that the road will have a speed limit of 90km/h, which would allow for vehicular flow with a travel time of nine minutes. Passengers traveling from Indios Verdes, near the Mexico City International Airport (AICM), will benefit the most from the road, says SICT.

The ministry explained that the construction of the main road created 15,000 direct jobs and 30,000 indirect jobs that generated an important economic impact in the region and its population.
