Uniti Wholesale Expands ICON Network to MDC San Diego
Uniti Wholesale, a leading provider of fiber-based infrastructure, is expanding its West Coast presence with a new data center location at MDC San Diego. This move reinforces Uniti Wholesale’s international expansion and strengthens the growing digital ecosystem linking the United States and Mexico.
“Establishing services at MDC San Diego significantly extends the ICON Network’s cross‑border capabilities, offering our customers expanded choice, diversity, and superior performance for US-Mexico routes. This new gateway aligns with our strategy to meet the escalating demand for high‑capacity transport between Southern California and Baja California and supports our broader international footprint expansion,” says Joe Scattareggia, Executive Vice President and Chief Revenue Officer, Uniti Wholesale.
By integrating its Intelligent Converged Optical Network (ICON) with MDC’s Actively Neutral platform, Uniti Wholesale enables customers to deliver Ethernet services and 100G–800G wavelengths that scale on demand. This development enhances cross-border connectivity, offering faster, more resilient, and open routes between both nations’ digital economies.
As a founding member of MDC San Diego, Uniti Wholesale underscores its commitment to expanding high-capacity connectivity across vital US-Mexico corridors. MDC San Diego, Southern California’s first 100% carrier-neutral border-crossing data center, is strategically positioned near the San Ysidro and Otay Mesa ports of entry. The facility supports diverse fiber-crossing solutions that connect San Diego with Baja California, facilitating significant data traffic from western Mexico and the Baja Peninsula.
Integrating MDC San Diego into Uniti’s ICON Network gives customers access to diverse, resilient long-haul pathways optimized for the West Coast US-Mexico traffic and streamlines connectivity to Mexican networks. This initiative also continues Uniti Wholesale’s global expansion, delivering high-performance waves into major US data centers from international hubs in Wall Township (New Jersey), Jacksonville, Boca Raton, and Miami (Florida), and Virginia Beach (Virginia), creating resilient links between Central America and Europe.
“Uniti’s expansion into MDC San Diego strengthens the connective tissue of the US-Mexico digital corridor. By extending the ICON Network through our Actively Neutral ecosystem, Uniti is helping create more resilient, diverse pathways for cross-border connectivity,” says Juan Salazar, CEO, MDC Data Centers.
