Urban Transport Traffic Continues to Grow in 2021

Urban transport traffic continued its upward trends in Sep. 2021, with Mexico City, Guadalajara and Pachuca reporting an increase in passengers, according to a report by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI).

In Sep. 2021, 109.2 million passengers used Mexico City's urban passenger transport systems, a 3.8 percent increase from Aug. 2021, according to INEGI’s Monthly Statistics on Urban Transport of Passengers (ETUP). This is also a 16.7 percent increase from Sep. 2020 and shows the progress in the national vaccination plan and the reactivation of the city’s economy after the 2020 lockdown. Passengers, however, seem to be traveling shorter distances. In Sep. 2021, the different transportation systems traveled a distance of 12.5 million kilometers, a 2.2 percent decrease in comparison to Aug. 2021 but an increase of 11.1 percent year to year.

Guadalajara showed a much larger month-to-month increase in passengers in Sep. 2021, registering an 8.8 percent growth with 14.4 million passengers. This represents a 62.6 percent increase from the Sep. 2020. The electric train continues to dominate Guadalajara's urban passenger transport systems, registering 10.3 million passengers in Sep. 2021, followed by the Macrobus Service, the Macrobus Feeder Service, the Comprehensive Light Rail System and the Trolleybus.

In contrast, Monterrey registered a 1.4 percent month-to-month contraction in passengers in Sep. 2021. Monterrey registered less passengers than Guadalajara, with 11.4 million people using the urban transport systems in the said period and it was the only city in the report to show a backward trend month to month. However, Monterrey did show a 13.9 percent year to year increase in passengers from 2020. The System of Metrorrey Collective Transport continues to be the most popular transportation method in Monterrey, registering 9 million users in Sep. 2021.

Pachuca, the smallest city in the report, registered only 1.3 million users in Sep. 2021. The city increased its passenger activity 2.2 percent from the previous month and 3.6 percent year to year. The traveled distance dropped from Aug. 2021 by 2.9 percent and the Tuzobus continues to be the most popular transportation system with 828,000 users.
