What Skills Will the Architect of Tomorrow Need?

A few months ago, I was walking down the street and overheard a young worker talking to his friends: "Out of everything you learned in school, what do you actually apply at work?" It left me reflecting because it wasn't a rhetorical or provocative question. It was genuine.
Styles and trends always come and go, but what is constantly changing are the tools, the values, and, above all, the questions that continually arise due to the unique nature of our profession.
In this context, and focusing on my own sector, architecture, the question that should occupy schools, firms, and any forward-thinking professional is this: What skills will those who build tomorrow's world need?
I will try to answer this from practice, not theory. I base this on the projects we deliver, the mistakes we make, the clients who challenge us, and the team members who arrive with a training radically different from my own.
The most powerful tool for the architect of tomorrow will not be a software program, but the ability to ask the right questions before drawing the first line.
It is undeniable that the architect of the future will need to master digital tools. Generative artificial intelligence is already a reality, and anyone who chooses to ignore it is making a decision, conscious or not, to be left behind. Parametric design, advanced BIM, real-time energy simulation, and augmented reality as a tool for participatory validation are no longer the future: they are the immediate present.
However, we cannot fall into the trap of confusing technical mastery with the development of critical judgment. I have seen perfect renders hiding empty projects. I have reviewed flawless BIM models where no one had asked whether the building should exist in that way, in that place, or for that community. Technical precision without ethical judgment does not build cities; it builds stage sets.
What the current landscape demands is not an architect who knows how to use everything, but an architect who knows when to use what, for what purpose, where, and why. That distinction, seemingly subtle, changes everything.
The Return of Ethics as a Core Competency
For decades, ethics in architecture was reduced to compliance with regulations. Today, that is not enough.
Climate change has turned every design decision into an ethical decision. What materials do we choose, and where do they come from? How much water does this building consume in a city that no longer has enough? Are we densifying intelligently, or are we gentrifying under aesthetic pretenses?
On the other hand, there is a responsibility that goes beyond the built object: its impact on social relations. Designing is not just about giving shape to space, but about influencing who can inhabit it or remain in it. Every urban project silently redefines the dynamics of inclusion and exclusion, sometimes reinforcing existing inequalities and other times opening up real possibilities for connection and coexistence.
In that sense, design ethics also implies thinking about the entire lifecycle of buildings. It is not enough for a work to be “sustainable” at its grand opening; how it ages, adapts, and how easily it can be transformed without becoming waste is what truly matters. Architecture that ignores its future ends up becoming part of the urban waste problem, of constant demolition, and of infinite resource consumption.
At Taller 1339, we have had to learn to ask these questions before accepting a project. We don't always have all the answers. But asking the question is already part of the job. This competency cannot be taught by downloading a plugin or a program; it is built through reading, debating, making mistakes, and developing a stance that goes beyond aesthetics.
Management: Another Crucial Skill
Most projects do not die from a lack of ideas. They die from a lack of management. From budgets that ballooned without anyone anticipating it. From schedules that were wishes disguised as plans. From difficult conversations with clients that weren't had on time. From teams that worked in parallel without communicating.
In our firm, we have developed management systems that allow us to deliver on what we promise. This work isn't always visible or recognized, but it is what allows us to achieve goals without exhausting the team or letting down those who trust us. Project management, strategic client communication, negotiation, and the ability to build functional, interdisciplinary teams are competencies that tomorrow's architect will need.
When it comes to talent management—both one's own and the team's—it is crucial to know how to identify strengths, delegate wisely, and foster an optimal environment for personal performance. An architect will not only design spaces; they will also lead teams, make decisions under pressure, and be ultimately responsible for the workplace culture. All of this is part of management, a discipline that can, and must, be learned and perfected along the way.
In the end, a good project is not just a good idea well-drawn; it is an idea well-executed in every sense: with the right people, at the right time, and through the right decision-making.
This focus on management is not independent of how we conceive the design process today; rather, it becomes even more relevant in a context where digital tools have radically expanded the possibilities for exploration. Efficiency and the ability to coordinate decisions no longer just determine a project's viability, but also the quality with which new available resources are leveraged. In that sense, technology does not replace the need for good management; on the contrary, it makes it more visible and more demanding.
What Artificial Intelligence Cannot Do
AI deserves an honest paragraph. Image generation and design assistance tools are extraordinarily powerful. They can produce variations in seconds that used to take us days. They can explore formal territories that would be hard to imagine without them. They are, in the best sense, tools for creative expansion.
But there is something they cannot do: sit down with a family for two hours to understand how they truly live, or with an office project leader to learn what their teams genuinely need. Artificial intelligence amplifies the architect's capabilities; it does not replace them. But to be amplified, one must first have their own critical judgment to amplify. That is the starting point of any serious education.
In this scenario, judgment is not an abstract attribute, but a skill built through experience, knowledge, and critical observation. AI can suggest, combine, and expand, but it cannot comprehend the cultural, technical, or human implications of an architectural decision in a specific context.
That is why an architect's education cannot be reduced to mastering tools, no matter how advanced they may be. It must focus on strengthening the capacity for judgment, training the reading of context, and developing a deep understanding of how decisions chain together and produce consequences over time.
The architect of tomorrow will not be the one who handles the most tools or has the most answers. It will be the one who remains genuinely curious, ethically committed, and technically honest in the face of the complexity of building habitable worlds for the human beings of this century.
The role of the architect can no longer be understood as that of an isolated author, but rather as that of a mediator between multiple systems: ecological, economic, political, and community-based. Designing today requires recognizing those tensions and accepting that every technical decision has collective consequences. The question is no longer just how good a building looks, but who benefits, who is affected, and what kind of world it will help build.
