CAMEINTRAM, WWF Unite on Greening Mexico's Maritime Sector

In a significant step towards a greener future, the Mexican Chamber of the Marine Transportation Industry (CAMEINTRAM) and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) have joined forces to combat climate change and reduce emissions in the maritime sector. The collaborative agreement, signed on Friday, represents a pioneering alliance to decarbonize Mexico's maritime and port industry. 

This partnership highlights CAMEINTRAM's dedication to sustainability, marine conservation and the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, says Raúl Téllez Villagra, President, CAMEINTRAM. He adds that this is a significant and unprecedented alliance in CAMEINTRAM's journey towards a low-carbon future for the maritime industry in Mexico.

According to data from the National Inventory of Greenhouse Gas and Compound Emissions in 2019, Mexico's national fleet emitted about 1.55 million metric tons of CO2e (MTCO2) through fuel consumption. The offshore fleet, however, presents a more complex calculation with several studies yielding different results but CEPAL reports that in 2017 the fleet produced almost 11 MTCO2.

Jorge Rickards, Director Mexico, WWF, acknowledged CAMEINTRAM's collaborative efforts in raising awareness among enterprises and service providers about the critical importance of reducing emissions in the maritime transport sector. According to WWF, port and maritime sector emissions contribute to climate change and have severe health implications that have contributed to hospital admissions, chronic bronchitis, restricted activity days, asthma and school absenteeism.

The collaboration between CAMEINTRAM and WWF extends beyond emission reduction; it aims to bring improvement in port communities' health and protect maritime and coastal ecosystems. The initiative paves the way for job opportunities and green investments to produce, use and distribute clean and renewable fuel. This aligns with Mexico's national commitments, such as the National Determined Contribution, which are the efforts of the countries party to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to meet the global goal of reducing GHG emissions to a level that will not raise the planet's temperature above 2° C.
