But every new connected node — a cloud-based WMS, an IoT device in the warehouse, an EDI integration with a supplier — is also a potential entry point for malicious actors or cascading system failures.
The risk surface grows in proportion to digital maturity. Companies that are more technologically advanced are, paradoxically, more exposed if they lack a digital resilience strategy commensurate with their level of automation.

Cybersecurity Is Now a Core Logistics Function
The new role of the logistics consultant includes evaluating not only physical flows but also digital architectures. Questions around the resilience of your technology stack in the event of an outage, or having business continuity protocols to address an attack on your TMS must be part of any serious supply chain assessment.
The logistics of the future are designed in two layers: the physical layer, which we already know, and the digital layer, which we are only beginning to protect.
Some recommendations:
- Map your digital dependencies before attackers do
Create an inventory of all critical systems: TMS, WMS, tracking platforms, customer portals, supplier integrations, and tax systems. Identify which ones, if they fail, would stop operations in less than 24 hours. That is your perimeter of maximum protection. - Design digital business continuity protocols
Just as you have alternate routes when a highway closes, you need documented procedures to operate when your main systems go down. Can your operation run for 48 hours without access to the TMS? If the answer is no, you have a critical bottleneck. - Require cybersecurity standards from your technology providers
A weak link in your digital ecosystem is your vulnerability, even if it is not your own system. Include security clauses in contracts with software providers, platform operators, and logistics partners who access your data. - Segment your networks and access levels
Not all operators, drivers, suppliers, or customers should have the same level of access to your systems. Network segmentation and the principle of least privilege significantly reduce the impact radius of an incident. - Train your operations team, not only your IT team
Human error remains the main entry point for digital incidents. A phishing email that deceives a traffic coordinator can compromise the entire operation. Cybersecurity must be part of onboarding and continuous training for any employee with access to systems. - Monitor in real time, not only when an incident occurs
Implement continuous monitoring tools for your critical systems. Detecting an anomaly hours before it escalates can mean the difference between a minor incident and a multi-day disruption that impacts customers and regulatory compliance. - Integrate digital resilience into your business strategy
Investment in logistics cybersecurity is not an IT expense: it is an operational and commercial asset. Companies that demonstrate digital strength will have a competitive advantage in bids, partnerships, and customer relationships that require continuity guarantees across their supply chain.
