Sonora Advances Plans for New Binational Port of Entry
Mayor of Douglas José Grijalva and representatives from the City of Douglas, Arizona, participated in a strategic meeting in Hermosillo, Sonora, with officials from the Government of Sonora, the Municipality of Agua Prieta, and the Consulate of Mexico in Douglas to advance planning for the new Douglas/Agua Prieta Commercial Land Port of Entry, a project for the Sonora-Arizona Megaregion.
“The City of Douglas remains committed to working collaboratively with our partners in Mexico and the United States to foster progress and prosperity for our shared border region,” says Grijalva.
The meeting underscored a shared commitment to strengthening cross-border infrastructure, trade, and regional connectivity, while paving the way for sustainable growth and long-term prosperity on both sides of the border. The discussions focused on next steps for the project’s development in Mexico, including the completion of a revised diplomatic note and acquisition of additional property to align crossing coordinates.
Officials from both countries emphasized their intention for the new port to serve as a model for binational cooperation, enhancing trade efficiency and supporting the broader integration of the Sonora–Arizona economic corridor. The new facility will reduce congestion at existing crossings, improve the flow of goods, and solidify Douglas and Agua Prieta’s position as key gateways for North American commerce.
