Bolivia Will Counsel Mexico on Lithium Extraction

President López Obrador has announced the development of a new framework and policy  inspired by Bolivia's lithium industry experience. Mexican government officials have met with their Bolivian counterparts to discuss the possibility of receiving a diagnosis and proposals for the extraction of lithium in Mexico.

López Obrador said that this new alliance will help Mexico to become one of the most developed countries in the extraction of lithium, which will bring new opportunities and greater economic benefits.

Capitan Mining Announces Peñoles Drill Results

Capitan Mining announced drill results for its Durango-based Peñoles Project as part of their 2021 Capitan gold zone program. Holes 21-CARC-21 to 28 have the objective of defining and expanding known, near surface mineralization in the hanging wall zone and locate new zones of mineralization in step-outs towards the southwest. The company announced it also will expand and better define the on-strike extensions of the known mineralized zones outside of the current drill defined area.

Minera Alamos Announces Successful Blast at Santana Gold Mine

Minera Alamos reported it has successfully executed the first planned production blasts at the Nicho Norte pit at the Santana gold mine in Sonora. The first phase of the blasting at Nicho Norte provided excellent fragmentation, while further optimization is planned and blasting operations continue. This first material will be used to test the leaching circuit and commission the carbon plant prior to continuous loading of the heap leach pad, as Minera Alamos takes a prudent approach to ramping up operations at Santana throughout the remainder of 2021, ahead of more steady state operation in 2022.

Greater Potential for Bolañitos Mine

Endeavour Silver announced the results of its 2021 exploration drill program, which intersected high-grade gold silver mineralization at its Bolañitos mine in Guanajuato. Endeavour said that thanks to the strength of its business plan and market conditions, 2021 is expected to be a better year. This outlook was confirmed with its 1Q21 results, showing that the company was able to meet its production plans, despite the slowdown caused by weather conditions.

Defiance Silver Discovers New Mineralization Zone at San Acacio

Defiance Silver published an update to its drilling program at its Zacatecas silver project and announced the discovery of a new zone of mineralization in the core of its Veta Grande vein system. The company explained that its current drilling program is a continuation of the previously numbered drill holes. Defiance Silver is currently drilling DDSA-21-45 and has announced positive results from holes DDSA-21-35-38, which together drilled 1,496m.

Mining Companies Awarded for their Social Impact

Every year mining companies that have the best social programs and initiatives are recognized by the Mexican Center for Philanthropy (CEMEFI) with the distinctive Socially Responsible Company award (ESR). In 2021, 29 CAMIMEX-affiliated companies received this distinction representing more than 50 percent of Mexico's mining value.

Among the 29 recognized companies are Industria Peñoles, which has obtained this recognition for 20 consecutive years; Agnico Eagle Mexico and Newmont with 14 years; Fresnillo and Pan American Silver with 13 years; Minera Autlán with 12 years; Minera Frisco and Coeur Mexicana with 11 years; and ArcelorMittal México, Capstone and First Majestic with 10 years each.

More Mining Is Needed for a Decarbonized World

The demand for certain minerals is expected to increase exponentially in the coming years given their use in new green technologies and the transition to a low-carbon world. According to consultancy Wood Mackenzie, the mining industry must invest US$1.7 trillion over the next 15 years to be able to supply enough metals for this green shift. What metals are necessary for the green transition and what is Mexico's role in it?

Good Tailings Management No Longer Optional

Multiple tailings storage facility (TSF) failures have increased awareness of the importance of mine waste management. TSFs are high risk assets and as a result, they are now considered one of the most important structures in mining.

Much effort has been made to better manage tailings and many mining companies are improving their game by considering key areas for managing tailings. However, there is still work to be done and a lot of room for improvement.
