Barksdale Resources completed full ownership of the San Javier copper-gold project in Sonora, Mexico, and reported resampling results indicating gold mineralization roughly 28% larger in volume than its 2021 model, with intercepts up to 3.464g/t gold. The update lands as Sonora consolidates its role as the anchor of Mexico's copper investment pipeline, benefiting from an eased federal permitting backlog that has unlocked construction timelines for several state mining projects in 2026. A confirmed gold resource would strengthen San Javier's economics beyond its existing copper-only PEA, positioning the project alongside other Sonora assets advancing toward development-ready status.

Barksdale Resources has closed out its acquisition of the San Javier copper-gold project in Sonora, completing a final C$227,500 (US$162,017.54)cash payment and issuing 4,550,000 shares to Tusk Exploration to consolidate 100% ownership of the deposit's 12 concessions.

The company disclosed the milestone alongside new assay results from a resampling program that returned 9m grading 3.464g/t gold and 12m at 1.084g/t gold, results management says point to a materially larger gold footprint than previously modeled at the site.

San Javier sits 140km east of Hermosillo, adjacent to Federal Highway 16, and hosts an iron-oxide-copper-gold (IOCG) style deposit. A 2024 Preliminary Economic Assessment led by Tetra Tech pegged the project's Measured and Indicated resource at 419.2 million pounds of copper, with 289.4 million pounds recoverable via heap leach processing, but that study, based on a 2021 core drilling campaign, did not carry a formal gold resource estimate despite acknowledging gold values in the assay data.

A second look at old core pays off

To close that gap, Barksdale's technical team went back to 2007-era drill holes located near two gold-bearing 2021 intercepts, pulling 178 preserved reject samples for renewed gold analysis at ALS Chemex under updated deposit-type protocols.

Four of the five re-sampled holes returned gold mineralization, spanning both shallow intervals, 6m at 0.345g/t and 18m at 0.504g/tm and deeper, higher-grade zones consistent with the 2021 results. Using Leapfrog modeling software, the company estimates the newly identified mineralized volume is roughly 28% larger than what its 2021 model captured, though average deposit-wide grades have not yet been calculated.

Barksdale has retained Antonio Loschiavo, President,AKF Mining Services, to assess how a formal gold resource would reshape San Javier's economics, which to date have been modeled as a copper-only asset. The company said the review could feed into an updated resource estimate using current metal prices and cost structures, and may support advancing the project from PEA-level study toward a Pre-Feasibility Study.

Why the timing matters for Sonora's copper pipeline

The full buyout and gold upgrade land as Sonora cements its position as the anchor of Mexico's copper investment cycle. The state accounts for roughly a third of the country's copper output and hosts two of the world's largest individual copper mines, alongside more than 80 active mining projects tracked by state authorities.

San Javier itself already carries a place in that broader pipeline: Mexico Business News has listed the roughly US$117 million project among a wave of Sonora and national copper developments advancing toward production between 2026 and 2029, alongside larger efforts such as Southern Copper's US$310 million El Pilar SX-EW operation.

That investment wave has been helped along by a shift in federal permitting. After a lengthy backlog left more than 160 exploration projects nationwide stalled, Mexican authorities began clearing permits in late 2025, unlocking construction timelines for Sonora projects such as Silver Tiger's El Tigre and helping justify record exploration budgets elsewhere in the state's mining corridor.

Coeur Mining, for instance, has committed US$158 million to Mexican exploration in 2026,roughly double its prior-year spend, with a large share directed at brownfields drilling in Sonora and Chihuahua, a strategy explicitly built around permitted ground rather than new concessions still caught in the backlog.

For Barksdale, full ownership removes a structural overhang that has shadowed San Javier since the 2020 transaction with Tusk: partial ownership and staged payments that left the project's long-term development path tied to installment obligations. With those payments now retired, the company controls the entire 12-concession package outright, including the Cerro Verde, San Carlos, Cobre Nuevo and Las Tunas blocks, at the same moment its geological team is arguing the deposit's gold content has been materially undercounted.

What comes next

The near-term catalyst will be whether Loschiavo's review translates the resampling results into a quantified gold resource that can be layered onto the existing copper-only PEA. If it does, San Javier would join a small group of Sonora assets, including Grupo México's El Pilar and Sonoro Gold's Cerro Caliche, advancing through Mexico's improved but still selective permitting environment toward construction-ready status.

Given elevated gold prices that have supported renewed exploration spending across Sonora, Chihuahua and Zacatecas this year, a formal gold credit could meaningfully alter San Javier's project economics beyond what the 2024 copper-only PEA captured, even before a full Pre-Feasibility Study is commissioned.
