The government of Chihuahua reported it is spearheading the Mexican delegation at a key mining convention in Toronto, Canada. The delegation went to promote Mexico as a safe and advantageous mining jurisdiction. Chihuahua’s administration expects to continue its successful investment attraction program as it did in previous years.

The government of Chihuahua confirmed its participation at the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) 2023, looking to attract investments to the state. Chihuahua’s Minister of Innovation and Economic Development, María Granados, thanked the Governor of Chihuahua, Maru Campos, for supporting the mining industry in the state and acknowledged the importance of state governments promoting the Mexican mining industry.

The government highlighted the help it received from the Chihuahua Mining Cluster. The governments of Durango and Zacatecas, two major mining states, also participated in the convention.

During the event, the Canada-based precious metals company Sierra Metals showcased its Bolivar mining unit via VR glasses made by the Innovation and Competitiveness Institute (I2C).

Chihuahua has been actively looking for new investment abroad. In 2018, former governor Javier Corral highlighted his government’s participation in PDAC 2018, which resulted in important investments from mining companies such as Agnico Eagle and Grupo Peñoles. At that time, the government also negotiated a permit for the Los Gatos project, which the Ministry of Economy (SE) reported was the eighth-largest mining project in the country in 2022.

According to the government of Chihuahua, the state is Mexico’s third-largest mining entity, producing 12% of the country’s mining output. Chihuahua is also the second-largest silver producer, the fourth in copper production and the fifth-largest gold producer.

Gerardo Durán, Director General, the Chihuahua Mining Cluster, said 94 percent of Chihuahua’s mining activity is concentrated in the central and southern regions of the state, comprising 20 municipalities. Of these districts, 15 of them are affiliated with the cluster and five represent 9.45% of Mexico’s metals production.
