Customized Modular Buildings Are Cost-Savers for Miners

By Lorenzo Núñez | Wed, 09/29/2021 - 11:07

Q: How are modular construction solutions helping to drive recovery in the construction, industrial and commercial real estate segments?

MO: Grupo GMI designs, manufactures and installs construction systems with a unique value proposition for the mining sector. We offer the fastest delivery times in the market and provide a quality that is superior to others. We have been driven by innovation throughout our 63-year history. One of our main value propositions is that we have designed large sets that are delivered in a kit format where all the necessary parts come together in a module that can be used as a bedroom, kitchen, storage or even a recreation area.

We also know that weather can severely impact mining projects due to their remote locations. Our designs improve the lives of the people who live in our modules. These designs are engineered like a big jigsaw puzzle. We can also transport our materials in different ways. On the other hand, these designs are very easy to assemble and no specialized labor is required. We can install our solutions wherever our customers need them or we can simply send a supervisor to ensure that the modules are assembled correctly.

Our modules also have the unique feature that they are relocatable. This makes our product the ideal solution for setting up a temporary city around short-term mining projects. If the customer then decides to move it to another location, the product retains 95 percent of the materials. It also has a lifespan of over 40 years.

Q: What is GMI targeting in the mining industry?

MO: Grupo GMI has three main business units. The first is focused on building systems and solutions through 3D structures. With these solutions, we can serve industries such as aeronautics. Our second business unit is focused on storage systems that we design and manufacture. The third business unit covers modular construction. In this area, we focus on development through innovation. At Grupo GMI, we have nine patents registered for these systems. The systems can be assembled and transported immediately. These modules are mainly focused on five sectors: education, healthcare, real estate, mining and serving in emergency situations, such as hurricanes or earthquakes.

In the mining industry, we believe that there are great possibilities to improve the traditional construction of housing and other complexes. We want people who live in these places to feel the comforts and warmth of a home. Also, the maintenance cost is low compared to other traditional solutions because our systems use technology that we have developed ourselves.

LV: In recent years, the mining industry has become increasingly committed to sustainability and GMI wants to be part of this transition. For instance, we offer solutions such as solar panels and water collectors with our modules. The mining sector is innovating many processes to reduce its carbon footprint at all stages of a project and GMI can help it accelerate this process. We have integrated many green solutions into our modules over the last few years and will continue to do so.

Q: How did the e-commerce boom in 2020 impact your offering and operations?

MO: We have worked very hard on our digital platforms and marketing campaigns through Linkedln, Facebook and Instagram. We want our clients to easily find us.  At the same time, we want to be able to briefly demonstrate our value proposition. Grupo GMI is present throughout the Americas, including North America, the Caribbean and Central America. In Mexico, we have carried out projects in almost every state.

Grupo GMI specializes in building solutions across a broad selection of industries. GMI is now also offering infrastructure solutions to the mining industry.
