Equinox Gold Reports 60,113tCO₂e Emission Reduction in 2025

Canada-based Equinox Gold’s newly published sustainability performance results highlight a 60,113t CO2e emissions reduction and zero significant environmental incidents during a major organizational portfolio transition in the Americas. These metrics establish an operational baseline for environmental compliance and corporate governance that directly impacts regulatory alignment, mining concession security, and ESG-driven investment capital within Mexico's extraction market. The ongoing operational suspension at the company's Los Filos Mine Complex in Guerrero underscores the high-stakes intersection of localized community land access agreements, public mediation frameworks, and risk management for foreign operators in the domestic mining sector.

Canada-based Equinox Gold has published its Sustainability Report 2025, outlining the ESG performance parameters across its asset portfolio. Among the most outstanding achievements, the company reported zero environmental incidents per million hours worked and 60,113t CO₂e emissions reductions. 

Equinox Gold noted that this reporting period reflects an organizational transition following the corporate combination with Calibre Mining in June 2025, alongside the pending acquisition of Orla Mining scheduled to close in 3Q26.

Operational health and safety disclosures show that the company achieved 0 workplace fatalities among employees and contractors during 2025. The Total Recordable Injury Frequency Rate decreased from 2.21 in 2024 to 1.65 in 2025 per million hours worked, which outperformed the corporate 2025 safety target of 2.85 or less. Conversely, the All Injury Frequency Rate rose from 9.92 to 11.48 year-over-year, and the Lost-Time Injury Frequency Rate increased from 0.49 in 2024 to 0.70 in 2025. 

Total recorded exposure hours reached 10.65 million hours worked for employees and 22.1 million hours worked for contractors, establishing 100% coverage under formal occupational health and safety management systems. The Los Filos Mine Complex in Guerrero, recorded an All Injury Frequency Rate of 12.54, a Lost-Time Injury Frequency Rate of 0.96, and a Total Recordable Injury Frequency Rate of 1.93. 

Environmental Metrics and Waste Profiles

Environmental metrics indicate a Significant Environmental Incident Frequency Rate of 0.00 per million hours worked, which satisfied the corporate target of 1.2 or less due to the recording of 0 significant environmental incidents. 

Total mineral waste generation reached 203.3Mt, comprising 17.9Mt of tailings and 185.4Mt of waste rock. Operational processes at the Los Filos Mine Complex produced 2.7Mt of waste rock and 0t of conventional tailings due to the utilization of heap leach infrastructure. 

Total corporate energy consumption reached 12 million GJ, with 10% sourced from renewable energy platforms. The corporate energy intensity ratio reached 13.40GJ/oz of gold produced. Gross Scope 1 greenhouse gas emissions totaled 612,006t CO2e. Indirect Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions totaled 92,857t CO2e under the location-based method, and 46,450t CO2e under the market-based method, with the Los Filos Mine Complex accounting for 59% of the global market-based Scope 2 footprint. Total corporate greenhouse gas emissions intensity reached 0.73t/oz CO2e of gold produced. 

This upward trend in emissions is attributed to asset integration dynamics following the corporate combination with Calibre Mining, varying operational energy profiles of newly integrated assets, and transitional adjustments to mine plans and processing configurations across the asset portfolio. Operational efficiency initiatives, power purchase agreements, and international renewable energy certificates avoided an estimated 60,113t CO2e during the year, the company says.

Total water withdrawals reached 19.91 million m³ and total water discharges reached 11.96 million m³, with 0 recorded water permit compliance violations. Progressive reclamation practices achieved 40ha of active land restoration, while new land disturbance totaled 448ha. 

Socio-economic disclosures specify that the total corporate workforce comprised 13,163 workers at the end of the reporting period, consisting of 5,219 permanent or temporary employees and 7,944 contractors. Women accounted for 16% of total employees and held 30% of the seats on the Board of Directors. Collective bargaining agreements covered 56% of the employee population, with 0 recorded strikes or lockouts during the year. The corporate operations generated US$2.1 billion in direct economic value distributed, which included US$352 million paid in employee salaries and benefits, US$129 million paid in corporate income taxes, US$64 million paid in royalties, and US$14 million directed to localized community investments. 

In Mexico, community investments totaled US$4.435 million. National procurement spending accounted for 93% of total procurement expenditures across the corporate asset portfolio, with the Los Filos Mine Complex directing 18% of its operational procurement to local suppliers. Local community relations departments tracked 259 formal community grievances, achieving a 93% resolution rate by the conclusion of the calendar year. 

Los Filos Mine Complex Performance

The open-pit and underground heap leach operations at the Los Filos Mine Complex generated 2.70Mt of waste rock and 0t of conventional tailings during 2025. Due to active residual leaching and care and maintenance requirements, the Mexican operation accounted for 59% of the global corporate market-based Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions footprint, which consolidated at 46,450t CO2e.

Safety performance indicators at the asset included 0 workplace fatalities. Calculated per 1 million hours worked, the complex registered an All Injury Frequency Rate of 12.54, a Lost-Time Injury Frequency Rate of 0.96, and a Total Recordable Injury Frequency Rate of 1.93. To mitigate risk factors associated with regional institutional constraints, the company completed 100% human rights training coverage for all stationed security personnel, in alignment with the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights. 

Socio-economic tracking shows that the localized workforce comprised 473 total positions at year-end, consisting of 220 permanent employees, 1 temporary employee, and 252 contractors. Locally hired personnel demonstrated a female representation rate of 41%, marking the highest proportion across the corporate portfolio. 

Regional supply chain integration achieved a 18% local procurement allocation to community suppliers. Furthermore, a dedicated Community Commitments Management System monitored 52 active local agreements, maintaining a delivery performance rate between 90% and 100%.
