Leading copper producer Grupo México is making efforts to promote the implementation of its Ethics Code among its employees across the country via seminars.

Grupo México has committed to fostering an ethical approach to its daily activities with the implementation of over 280 seminars via which the company focuses on the application of the company’s Ethics Code. On Sept. 21, 2022, the company launched the first session of these talks at its headquarters, with the aim to spread its Ethics Code and Complaints Procedure among its employees. The company’s workers, both unionized and independent, must then implement these approaches in their daily activities.

The Ethics Code covers topics such as human rights, commercial and government relations, anti-corruption and anti-money laundering measures, as well as internal procedures to address conflicts of interest, confidential information and intellectual property, among other issues. “At Grupo México, we maintain our ongoing commitment to our people, the environment, the communities we interact with, our stakeholders and, of course, the achievement of our objectives. This commitment is sustained in an organizational and work culture based on values such as honesty, responsibility, respect, effective communication and teamwork,” reads the code.

According to Grupo México, its Ethics Code is based on the 10 universal principles contained in the UN Global Compact initiative. Among the main principles promoted by the code are a commitment to human rights, respect for worker rights and supporting free worker association and enabling collective bargaining. Furthermore, the abolition of exploitation in all its forms and respect for the environment by fostering initiatives that promote environmental responsibility and establishing a preventive approach in favor of the environment are marked as key.

Regarding its similarly crucial anti-corruption measures, the company stated that it forbids any form of corruption that includes bribery, illicit payments and influence peddling. To avoid employee involvement in such activities, the company recommends that workers review its Anti-Corruption Policy or contact a director.

Anti-corruption is a key issue for mining companies, as it is a core part of the ESG measures that many are working to implement. On Jun. 30, 2022, MBN reported that sixteen mining companies were listed in the Corporate Integrity 500 Index (IC500), issued by Mexicans Against Corruption and Impunity (MCCI). In the index, Mexican companies represented 58 percent of those listed in the top 100. Industrias Peñoles and Fresnillo were the only companies listed in the Top 10.
