The central workshop of Grupo México, located in Chihuahua, received the certification for its Environmental Management System, granted by Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance (LRQA).

An Environmental Management System allows companies to manage environmental risks as well as legal compliance and continue to enhance their operation by establishing environmental objectives.

The company said that the acquisition of the certification demonstrates Grupo México’s tangible commitment to the care of the environment, preventing, controlling and mitigating the environmental impact of its operations.

The first operations to formally receive the certification were the La Caridad and Planta de Cal mines. “Grupo México maintains its ongoing commitment to our people, the environment, the communities we interact with, our stakeholders and, of course, the achievement of our objectives. This commitment is sustained in an organizational and work culture based on values such as honesty, responsibility, respect, effective communication and teamwork,” reads the recent Ethics Code of the company.

Grupo México said it will continue fostering an ethical approach regarding its daily activities with the implementation of over 280 seminars via which the company focuses on the application of the company’s Ethics Code. On Sept. 21, 2022, the company launched the first session of these talks at its headquarters, to spread its Ethics Code and Complaints Procedure among its employees. The company’s workers, both unionized and independent, must then implement these approaches in their daily activities.

According to Grupo México, its Ethics Code is based on the 10 universal principles contained in the UN Global Compact initiative. Among the main principles promoted by the code are a commitment to human rights, respect for worker rights and supporting free worker association as well as enabling collective bargaining. Furthermore, the abolition of exploitation in all its forms and respect for the environment by fostering initiatives that promote environmental responsibility and establishing a preventive approach in favor of the environment are marked as key.

Grupo México is the third-largest publicly traded company in Mexico, the largest mining company in the country and the world’s third-biggest copper producer.
