Leading Mining Players Met at Mexico Mining Forum 2022 ECHO

During Mexico Mining Forum ECHO 2022, hosted by Mexico Business at the Hyatt Regency Mexico City, the mining sector’s most important leaders gathered face to face for the first time in two years to discuss the state of the industry.

The mining sector is imperative for Mexico’s economy, having been a core economic activity in the country for centuries. Mexico is known for being a silver leading producer and supplies globally significant amounts of other precious and industrial metals, too. Nonetheless, like any other industry, challenges arise as time passes by, and players need to adapt.

MMF’s key questions, such as climate change, sustainability, legislation, community relations and insecurity were discussed among experts, with the aim to find solutions and different approaches to tackle these issues.

Key challenges in the Mexican context discussed during the conference’s first day include the operating environment and rule of law of the Mexican mining industry, the transition from environmentally passive to a sustainable projects, the potential of technology as a catalyst for effective ESG implementation, the creation of win-win scenarios for Indigenous communities and mining companies and the competitiveness and investment attractiveness of leading mining states like Sonora and Chihuahua.

On the second day of the forum, speakers explored topics like climate change and renewable energy, exploration results, safety and social responsibility, the production of lithium, security challenges and geopolitical factors.

Tatiana Clouthier, Minister of Economy, Christopher Ávila Mier, President of Government Relations and Legislative Liaison Committee, CAMIMEX, Arturo Vaca, Director of Energy and Technology, Peñoles, Margarita Bejarano, Director of Corporate Affairs, Argonaut Gold, Faysal Rodríguez, Senior Vice President Mexico, Torex Gold Resources, Leonardo Taylor, Director of Mines of the Sonora Government, Fernando Estrada, Director General, the Sonora Mining Cluster, Gerardo Durán, Director General, the Chihuahua Mining Cluster, Kenneth MacLeod, President and CEO, Sonoro Gold and Diana Centeno, Director General of Grupo Maya and Partner Women in Mining (WIM) all participated in the event, which took place from July 6 to July 8, 2022.
