Minera Media Luna (MML), a subsidiary of the Canada-based Torex Gold, agreed to cooperate with Guerrero and federal authorities to improve social security and health conditions in the state’s northern region.

MML recently held a meeting at its facilities with various government agencies and civil organizations in the Nuevo Balsas community of Guerrero to discuss ways to improve health conditions in the area. Among the attendees were the local Minister of Health, Aidé Ibarez; Juan Ferrer, Director, Institute of Health for Well-being (INSABI); Cocula Mayor Carlos Duarte; Faysal Rodríguez, Vice President for Mexico, Torex Gold, and José Peralta, Manager for Public Affairs, MML.

During his participation, Peralta presented a summary of the current conditions of the Atzcala, Nuevo Balsas and Cocula health centers, as well as the conditions of the “Casas de Salud” in La Fundicion and the Valerio Trujano de Tepecoacuilco communities. Ferrer committed to addressing the requests for medical supplies and to hiring enough health personnel for the health centers in the area. He also vowed to assess the state of the infrastructure at the Cocula health center, as well as working closely with MML to establish the guidelines for the proper operation of the Casas de Salud.

Ibarez highlighted the importance of maintaining  the Casas de Salud in optimal conditions, which are a teaching place for Benito Juarez schools of medicine’s graduates. She asked Mayor Duarte and MML to continue supporting these units to enhance both health services and teaching opportunities.

In this sense, Rodríguez stressed that the company is committed to contributing to health services, benefiting Guerrero’s northern region inhabitants. He also thanked the local Ministry of Health for attending to the needs of the population in due time.

This is not the first time MML and Torex Gold collaborate with local authorities in improving living conditions for surrounding communities. On Mar. 21, 2022, MML reported that it signed an agreement to grant 68 scholarships for high school and college students of Nuevo Balsas, Real del Limon, La Fundicion, San Nicolas, Alcanmantitla, Tlanipatlan and Axtitlac communities.

In August 2022, Torex Gold announced an investment of over US$906.2 million for the construction and launch of the Guerrero-based Media Luna Project, which aims to produce 80% gold and 20% copper. The project includes the installation of a conveyor belt that will cross the Balsas river via an underground tunnel to the company’s processing plant.
