Mining Companies Recognized with Ethics and Values Award
The Mexican Confederation of Industrial Chambers (CONCAMIN) awarded mining companies operating in Mexico that have contributed to the development of better industry practices regarding social, ethical and environmental issues.
CONCAMIN awarded gold-leading producing company Industrias Peñoles and silver-leading producing company Fresnillo with the 2022 Industry Ethics and Values Award. Both companies were recognized for their efforts in keeping their focus on revenue growth without compromising the environment or the well-being of surrounding communities. “The company is guided by principles and values established more than a hundred years ago. It is our priority to maintain dialogue with relevant stakeholders to know their perception regarding our activities and the company’s programs launched in and outside of their communities,” said Fernando Alanís, Director, Baluarte Minero, an operation from Peñoles.
This is the 18th time that CONCAMIN gives such an award to Peñoles. Meanwhile, Fresnillo has won the award 13 times. Both companies have developed social impact strategies that aim to contribute to the social development of communities living near the companies’ projects. “Transparency is an essential cornerstone for Fresnillo’s corporate governance. Our culture is in line with national and international sustainability principles, which has significantly contributed to the maintenance of our leading position over time,” said Erika Martínez, Deputy Director of Compliance, Fresnillo.
For the third consecutive year, Minas de Oro Nacional, a subsidiary of Alamos Gold, also received the award for its acquisition of new technologies to reduce the company’s greenhouse gas emissions and the implementation of an energy efficiency program at its Mulatos mine, which also included water efficient usage program and a recycling initiative, among other actions.
Socially, the company also contributed with scholarships for surrounding communities, facilitating access to high school programs, ensuring a water supply and providing dignified housing.
The steel producer Minera Autlán also won an award: The company was awarded the Prominent Practice Award for its contribution to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) in Hidalgo by launching over 87 projects that benefited 17,000 inhabitants of 49 communities in the municipalities of Xochicoatlan, Tepehuacan de Guerrero, Molango de Escamilla, Lolotla and Tlanchinol. “Autlán is committed to maintaining the principles of transparency and respect, with the aim to contribute to the development of our partners, to meet the demands of our clients and foster the development of our communities,” the company stated.
The Industry Ethics and Values Award sets out to reward socially-responsible actions carried out by companies in the mining industries. CONCAMIN, along with the Mexican Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer for the Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (FUNTEC) and Caux round Table, evaluate the companies’ programs.
