New Zealand to Share Innovative Practices with Mexico

New Zealand and the Sonora Mining Cluster are organizing a three-day online event called “New Perspective from New Zealand,” which will provide innovative solutions to the Mexican mining sector in the areas of technology, health, safety, social, environmental and governance. The forum will be held from May 11 to 13.

The event will focus on the needs and problems that the Mexican mining sector faces and their possible solutions through innovation, ESG and saving systems. Innovation panels will focus on data and its efficient management, ESG in the best ways to build relationships with communities and saving systems on taking care of essential resources such as water.

Rhianon Berry, New Zealand Trade & Enterprise Commercial Attaché for Mexico and Central America, and Alberto Orozco, President of the Sonora Mining Cluster, will host the event, which will feature presentations by experts from New Zealand and Mexico. Participants from New Zealand include Wayne Scott, Executive Director of MinEx and Former Inspector of Mines for the Queensland Department of Natural Resources and Mines, and Rene Sterk, Director of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) and an advisor to mining companies and organizations. Exponents from Mexico include Alberto Orozco, CEO of Capitan Mining; José Tovar, Vice President of the Cluster Sustainability Commission and Community Development Manager of Alamos Gold; and Berenice Valdez, CEO and Founder of Valdez Smith Consulting.

Key stakeholders are expected to meet with representatives from the 11 participating New Zealand companies, who will also showcase the strategies and resources they are using to increase their sustainability and productivity as they transition to mining 4.0. "New Zealand has a successful track record of technology development and innovation in mining, which is little known in Mexico," Berry said.

Berry said that after identifying and analyzing the needs and challenges of the Mexican mining sector, both countries recognized that they share several challenges. For this reason, New Zealand's innovation and technology make it a strategic partner for Mexico. Orozco added that alliances with the government and institutions strengthen mining and open up new opportunities for the country, especially for Sonora. "We are looking for ways our companies can have more options to improve their processes and profitability and also to generate more jobs in our state," said Orozco.
