The Statistical Yearbook of Mexican Mining reported that Tamaulipas contributed 0.04 percent to the national mining production in 2021. The total value of Mexico’s mining stood at MX$2.4 trillion (US$122.2 billion). As coal production ramps up and lithium exploration intensifies, the Tamaulipas can look toward increasing its share of production.

The creators of the 2021 Yearbook, the Mexican Geological Survey (SGM) and the Ministry of Economy, reported that Tamaulipas’ production value in 2020 was MX$1.1 billion (US$55 million). This number grew 26 percent compared to 2019, when MX$879.5 million (US$44 million) was obtained, but decreased 56.3 percent in comparison to 2016, when it rose to MX$2.5 billion (US$126 million).

In 2020, Tamaulipas saw a production of 1,693,372 tons of stone aggregates: 6,188 tons of sulfur, 3,211,000 tons of limestone and 28,512 tons of talc, produced by Cemex Concretos, Cal Hidratada del Noreste, Triturados Mante and Triturados Palmillas.

Tamaulipas boasts mining regions with silver, zinc and lead potential. It is also an important non-metallic mineral state producer. In the regions of El Cañon del Novillo and the basin of the Gulf of Mexico. The main non-metallic mineral deposits in production are located in the municipalities of El Mante, Victoria and Cruillas.

Currently, Tamaulipas has 124 mining concessions representing 112,523ha, and SGM does not have any allotments in the state.

The mining industry in Tamaulipas keeps growing and flaunts significant development. SGM is also carrying out the Coal and Alternative Energies Investment Project 2022-2023, which is currently determining the economic and technical feasibility of over 63 mining projects. The project has a budget of over US$449 million for 2022, which will be used to identify prospective areas that may hold important coal reserves and update the currently available geological information. The document highlights that because of CFE’s request, SGM must report the quantity and quality of the discovered mineral.

The goal for this and the following year is to continue to register the geology of major producing regions like Coahuila, Nuevo Leon, Tamaulipas and Sonora. Moreover, SGM is carrying out a US$2.7 million lithium exploration program, which has identified lithium deposits in various other states.
