Q: As we know, DHL Supply Chain chose Brazil and Mexico to launch its first fleet of electric trucks in Latin America, is that right?

A: Continuing with a sustainable region strategy, DHL Supply Chain decided to launch its electric fleet, first in Brazil and then in Mexico. In terms of economy, fleet volume and operation, Mexico continues to be one of the countries that contributes the most to the region. Launching these vehicles in Mexico helps to set a trend among those who are watching our next steps and equipment. We will also launch these vehicles in Colombia, Chile, and Peru. These countries have similar economies, especially Brazil and Mexico, so the introduction of the fleet in both countries will give us a model to follow in the rest of the countries.

Q: What are the main challenges you have encountered in deploying the fleet in Mexico?

A: The first challenge is having the vehicles available in the market and with the necessary functions. The second challenge is the infrastructure. As there are few charging stations throughout the country, we found ourselves in the need of installing them ourselves besides buying the trucks. The third challenge is the cost of these kinds of vehicles. While investing in these technologies takes a great effort, we chose this investment as an opportunity to show our commitment to this market and inspire others.

Q: How important is the pharmaceutical sector for DHL Supply Chain, after the pandemic and what opportunities are you looking for within it?

A: We recently acquired New Transport Applications (NTA), a specialized company in logistics services for the pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors. This shows our commitment to Mexico because we are sure that this is where we need to grow, taking advantage of emerging opportunities. We plan to commit to the country, grow with it and provide solutions to this market.

Q: In addition to the electrification strategy, what other priorities do you have for 2023?

A: We have a comprehensive strategy that focuses on electrical equipment for last mile, pharmaceuticals and logistics. For now, we will continue to use gas vehicles, but we add value by using solar panels in our warehouses. We are also using aerodynamic trailers to help us reduce our carbon footprint, in addition to many other actions.

As DHL Supply Chain, we are fully committed to the environment. We have created a comprehensive strategy that includes 3 main aspects, environmental, social and governance. With this we seek to guarantee our zero emissions goal by 2050. We are keeping our eye on all the possibilities that can open up if we can reduce the industry’s carbon footprint.
