Shipping company Hapag-Lloyd and its Mexican business partner Transportes Marva started ground operations with BYD’s 100% electric heavy units. With the incorporation of the electrified fleet, Transportes Marva aims to reduce emissions by at least 2,000 tons of CO2 every year.

Transportes Marva is already operating the first of its 120 Q3MA units, it announced at Expo Transporte ANPACT 2022. The company made these trucks available to customers interested in decarbonizing their operations. The new trucks will cover Hapag-Lloyd’s routes between 260km and 400km within the metropolitan area of the Valley of Mexico.

To guarantee the optimal operation of the units, Transportes Marva trained 200 operators to get the most out of BYD’s Q3MA, a model that is already in its third generation. The project, which represents a milestone for Hapag-Lloyd, Transportes Marva and the Mexican transportation industry, is complemented by Element Fleet Management’s ARC, a comprehensive solution designed to make a smoother transition to electromobility.

The Q3MA tractor trucks offer a payload of 28.5 tons and a 6x4 configuration. The units are equipped with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and a cab-over design, which maximizes maneuverability within cities. The trucks are equipped with Blade batteries, BYD’s exclusive lithium-iron phosphate batteries. These batteries are considered the safest in the market, in addition to providing greater autonomy and a light, compact design.

The Q3MA model that Transportes Marva makes available to customers was tailored to the local market with components manufactured for North America, including fifth wheels, suspensions, brakes and security systems from recognized manufactures in Mexico and the region. The transport company has worked closely with BYD and BY DELÉCTRICO, its authorized distributor in Mexico, to prepare a robust plan that guarantees the availability of parts for maintenance and repair.

Recharging

It takes between one and two hours and thirty minutes to recharge the Q3MA, depending on its current charge. BY DELÉCTRICO currently has the necessary infrastructure to operate with fast charges – that is, DC 150kWh –in Puebla and in the Valley of Mexico. Likewise, all models comply with the corresponding standards, using CCS1 chargers in direct electric current at 150kWh.

With the 120 fully-electric tractor trucks, Transportes Marva owns the largest fleet of zero-emission heavy trucks outside of China and the second largest in the world.
