Leon will have a new Smart Road Mobility System, announced Héctor López, Municipal President of Leon, on Twitter. “We keep building the Leon of the future in a smart and sustainable way. We present the Smart Road Mobility System, a project that plans to reduce transfer times for the people of Leon and optimize road circulation of both private and public transportation,” López tweeted. The first stage of this new Mobility System includes the construction of 29 cross points over Boulevard López Mateos, says El Sol de León. The city government states that this system will be safe, trustworthy, predictable and comfortable for pedestrians, cyclists and public and private transportation users.

This new mobility system will monitor real-time information on buses, cars, pedestrians and cyclists in certain areas of the city to address any overcrowding problem, reports El Sol de León. The system will use predictive behavior models that will inform where people want to go. One of the biggest advantages of this model, explains López, is that it focuses on road safety thanks to a video surveillance system that will help support a better response from local authorities and emergency services when necessary. According to Alejandro Brunnel, Director General at SEMEX, “Leon is a leader of innovation in Mexico” as it is the first city in the country to implement a system like this.

The New Bet in Connectivity

Other cities have made investments to optimize mobility through the use of smart tools. For example, the city of Aguascalientes installed smart traffic lights that track the hours of highest traffic to self-program and extend the duration of red or green lights, allowing for better fluidity in the city as previously reported by MBN. Cities are also adopting new technology trends that push forward smarter and more optimized connectivity on roads.

During MAS 2021, Ricardo Anaya, Staff Product Manager at Qualcomm Mexico, highlighted the possibilities of vehicle connectivity. For example, some are exploring C-V2X, a protocol created for vehicles to communicate with each other and with cyclists, pedestrians and road infrastructure like street lights, reported MBN. “This is the importance of connectivity; this is the future of the vehicle, the future of smart cities and even ports and factories,” he added. However, to better optimize these systems, 5G is vital. Luz Elena Jurado, CEO of Volvo Trucks, explained that Mexico still has many challenges to overcome to install these technologies, particularly in relation to synergies between the private and public sectors in Mexico.
